You nailed it, MLM, given the medium you had to work with.
This next bit involves the hat, not you, you did a great job on the front but on that side view? Dome! And that IV let you down on the back, too. The hat cannot fully allow the expression of the artistry you possess.
And, if the audience will note:
See the back? (Side view, see the curve?) That Fed IV block is too domed. We've got taper in the back where it should be straight, or better yet, reverse tapered. But if MLM were to push it down far enough to eliminate what is left of the dome, thereby eliminating the taper, the center crease would be hitting his head.

The photos are taken from different angles and different distances which will enhance any "doming" effect - wide angle lens, etc. MLM should try putting his hat down, stepping back say 2 metres and then photographing the had from above the brim plane using a zoom to fill the photo frame. That give us a better idea of what the true difference is.Piker wrote:Weston's

Something about that block looks uber tapered, which is a shame because the bash you gave it looks absolutely awesome.
I would suggest making yourself a block.
This is an unlucky problem because most of the Fed IV's that Akubra shells out are totally stovepipe. Getting one as tapered as that was like a 2/10 chance...

After I punch out the diamond bash I gave mine, I am thinking about turning the brim back up, turning the hat 45 degrees and having a raw edge Derby hat. Derby's (Kerwood, or otherwise) have wider sides than the front and back.
Is the first sign of insanity that 3Kbucks starts to make sense? Aint fixin' it.

Well I just pulled my Fed IV off of my head to compare to your photos. Mine has a little reverse taper when I hold it in my hands, which straightens out when I put it on, and is a lot flatter across the top. I'm only new to the hat game but I think yours would be fixable. I also think you did a good job on the bash.
How does it look when you're wearing it? Photos?

Thank you very much for all your comments. I'm considering to make a block. And about the shape of the hat, what do you think about this one? Does it have the same problem?
