chin straps and wind straps

Post by senkusha »

How many of you have accessories like wind straps installed on your fedoras? A chin strap, or a strap on the back that keeps your hat on (I'm not sure what it's called.) Or both even?

I have some yardwork hats with chin straps, and I hate them. They get in my way, and strangle me when I push the hat off.

I also have a couple with a "wind trolley." This is a cord that wraps around the crown for storage, but can be unwrapped. There's a button on the end that is meant to be put through a lapel hole and prevent the hat from getting very far if blown off. It works, but I rarely submit to a cord dangling from my hat. But some find them useful.

removable adjustable chin-straps

I cycle a lot and wanted to keep the hat in place.
I sewed a tiny loop into either side of the sweatband, a little to the back of just over my ears.
The loops are just big enough to pass a shoelace through.
One end of the shoelaces is knotted; the other ends go into a spring toggle of the type you get on drawstring rucksacks.
I adjust this chinstrap so I can hang the hat snugly on my back with the strap tucked under my shirt lapels. You hardly feel it.
When the hat is on, the strap is snug under my chin and behind my ears.
Why?
The strap is hardly noticeable,
If the hat blows off forward my ears hold the straps so it doesn't blow away,
If it blows off backward my chin does the same.
