Jacket question for Mr Keppler

Hi,

I wonder if you could tell us a little about the jacket you had made by Filghtsuits that has apparently become the "archive jacket". I like the look of it very much.

What leather was used?

It appears distressed in the recent photos - is that wear or the leather we see?

What kind of lining was used?

Do you remember how many were made in that style?

Were you happy with how it came out?

My original jackets by FS was goatskin, non-distressed. The last one FS made for me as we thought FS was being sold(The deal fell through! The original good guys still own the company) was horsehide. The wear you see came from use. If I haden't "expanded" I'd still be wearing it. The lining was satin as in the back cover of "Stars" picture, which is where the gussets were copied from. If memory serves correctly (Probably not!) around 100 were turned out, which includes one with snaps on the wind flap. I was well pleased with the jacket except for one thing. The first one had the "Stars" inside pocket with the thin strip of leather facing. All suqsequent jackets had the triangular inside pocket. I told the production manager at the time that the pocket was wrong. He said "That's the way we do them now!" They were nice enough to work with me, so I didn't argue the point. I was quite pleased with the jacket. Remember, in 1986 there were no screen grabs and no really detailed stills of either of the jackets. They had an original TOD jacket at Hard Rock Cafe' in Beverly Hills and I went to see it as I was in the area when I heard about it. I didn't have a camera with me at the time(no disposables or cell phone cameras in 1986!) so I went back a few days later with my Minox GL 35. Sitting in the show case was a Bananna Republic A-2!! I asked the mgr. where the real jacket was and he Lucasfilm wanted it back. When I said "but that's not the right jacket" I was told that " Nobody knows the difference." That kind of thinking gives us Model 1892 Winchesters in Civil war movies.

Wow!! I can't believe I typed all that. That's why I prefer phone calls.

Yep, not much has changed, Lee. The jacket I saw hanging in the Hard Rock in Las Vegas last year was an A-2 and listed as an actual screen used Raiders jacket.

I believe it was one worn by Ford in "Hanover Street', as it did have B&N label.

Why would LucasFilm take it back? Just because they could?

Thank you so much for that response. Very interesting. In 1986 I too was trying to have an Indy Jacket made - the venture failed. I thought they were cowhide and tried to get a civil A2 modified (no knits, vented back, etc) Unfortunatley my crude pen diagrams and enthusiasm for the moive only scared off the leather shop proprietor. We also had an Indy jacket "on tour" and on display in Australia in the 1980's. I'm not certian which one it was - probably ToD. All I know was the jacket here did not have knits...
