I've never tried it (not nearly that good yet! LOL!), but I have been there when Chris Camp & Adam Winrich have done it, either separate or together.
It is seriously awesome to be able to see in person! That's always a huge hit at our get togethers...

If I'm NOT mistaken, that's MY voice saying "Rich?"
I THINK that's some footage from the Independent Film Festival, the Indie Gathering, up in Cleveland, Ohio a couple years ago, and that's Rich Hoffman throwing that firewhip.
If I am indeed correct, I have cracked THAT firewhip.
They are A LOT of fun, especially when they're REALLY soaked when you first light them, and you end up throwing this HUGE fireball downrange.
They are a little heavy though, but they crack loud and easily.
The whips that Chris Camp and Rich Hoffman have, (and I think the ones that Adam Winrich has got,) are made in Florida by "Fire By Riz." I've seen other people selling firewhips, but Riz's seem to be the favorites.
I've considered getting a couple myself, but to perform with them in many venues requires a pyrotechnics license, and I have no place to store one safely, (Coleman fuel STINKS...A LOT! Chris keeps his in a big bucket with a sealing lid to cut down on the smell. I don't have a garage, so they'd have to stay outside, and I'd be afraid they'd "Wander off" some weekend.)

That's a sure-fire ( get it? ) way to instantly age and distress a new whip! 
Although,
lighting a high-$ purchase on fire would give me nightmares as well. What type of whips
are used for performances like this? Are they regular whips covered with a protective
layer or coating? ( not that I'm anxious to try this myself, cool as it is. I'd probobly pull a

I've found that it's not the Coleman fuel that stinks, but the lamp oil. I used to use a mixture of Coleman and lamp oil and had to be careful about the smell, but I've switched to straight Coleman and I've had no problems with smell.
For those that don't know, fire whips are made from kevlar rope and kevlar-blended wicking to make a unique whip that is fire-retardant and designed to hold fuel. THEY ARE NOT NORMAL LEATHER WHIPS!

Yes, the fireball pictured is EXACTLY what I'm talking about...
And the nifty thing with those is, not only do you get the CRACK sound at the end, but you also get the "FWOOM!" sound of the fireball, and the same thing the "Whoosh" sound of the bullwhip, add to that the dull roar of the fire.
I have some firewhip footage that we shot for the Cliffhanger trailer around her somewhere. I'll have to see if I can find it. I had a Sennheiser Shotgun microphone on a boom pole plugged into my camera for that, and the audio that I got from it was just AMAZING!
Another nifty thing about fire whips is if you do it fast enough, you can do self-wraps with them, because the fuel burns so fast that it just touches you and it's gone, (like the way fire eaters do it.)
I'd seen Chris do it a bunch of times, and decided to try it the couple of time I cracked a fire whip. It's DARN COOL! I do not however recommend doing this when they are still newly soaked, as it will leave burning fluid on your clothing. I advise to only do self-wraps once the whip is no longer throwing large fireballs down range. Otherwise, you set your bottom on fire...
