G'day all, first time poster here.

I've been lurking for a while and decided to finally register and say hi.

Last week I ordered a Fed IV deluxe after reading and reading and reading posts. It seemed to be the way to go with the budget I have. So this morning I got an email saying my COW account had been activated and I can now post, so here I am :). A few hours later, my wife rings me at work and says, "Honey, a package just arrived for you..." Now I can't wait to get home! And people don't like Mondays :)

Welcome Aza, always good to have another Aussie around the traps.

I ordered my Fed Deluxe 4 weeks ago and it is on a back order - so here's hoping I get the same call soon.

So does the Fed IV make a good Raiders hat now? Didn't they change the block recently?

I've seen some Feds that say "Yes" and others an emphatic "No!!"

Depends on the size and the shape of your head and your skill as a basher (survey some of Aeris_Canon's work).

my 2 cents

Thanks, but what makes them hit or miss? I did find a Raiders bash on this thread that looked really good.

Looking at the specs for the hat, I'm guessing the new block took care of the "too tall" problem, right?

G'day Jonesy, 'owyagowen mate!

When I first placed my order I went for a size 61 and was told they were on backorder. Then I was looking at my "Snowy River' Akubra and realized it was a size 59 (I don't know why I didn't check that first). I remeasured my noggin and got 60 so I emailed Hats Direct and changed down a size. 60 was in stock and now I'm going home to hold it :). I dealt with Jenny at Hats Direct and was very happy with the service and quick replies to my emails.

Not bad at all Aza. I too ordered a 61 and that size is where the issues were with the felt colour (so I believe). I have to stick with the 61 (unless I go in for some head shrinking action  ) and hence am waiting . . patiently.

Newbie here. I ordered my size 58 FedIV Deluxe and am anxiously awaiting the next factory shipment. I could downgrade and get a regular shipped out immediately, but I really want to get as good a hat as I can get and still not break the bank. The folks at HD said they'd be getting the next shipment of deluxes in early this week. I just hope they can get it out to me in time for DragonCon. [-o<

In my correspondence with Hats Direct last week, they indicated they were expecting the size 61's to be back in stock "in the next week or so", so you shouldn't have too much of a wait.

Well, I got my Fed IV Deluxe on Monday and I've rebashed it every single night after I got home from work :).

I'm working on that Raiders turn thingy everybody keeps talking about but I'm not sure if I've got it right yet.

Can someone please tell me if it's turned enough or does it need to go around more?

Image

Seriously though, I have been thoroughly enjoying the hat. Here's a couple of proper photo's.

Plenty of work to do on it yet. This is the first time I've ever worked with a hat but I'm slowly getting the hang of it. I'll post more pics later. Right now, I've gotta go home and rebash it again! I'm gonna get a haircut too. I don't really like the look with the hat :-k

There you go aza, I can read the headlines now "Hat induces makeover for Brissie Boy". :rolling:

That is some serious reverse taper in the first photo!! Not sure whether Indy would approve!

Watch out for that bashing - it can be addictive . . . . there are help lines for blokes like us!

Thought so. I am a big fan of the LC bash and Indy displays a lot of class and savoir-faire when bantering with Dr. Schneider on the pier.

Good work

This is exactly why I am torn between SOC and LC pier bash - methinks I need two Fed Dlxes!!

Well my Fed Deluxe has finally arrived! :D :D I decided to bash it in a SOC style, although I don't have the heart to dust it up just yet.

I have been practising bashing for a while now, however I could not believe how easily this hat took the SOC bash - like it was made for it!

The quality and weight of the felt is something else and it makes my AkAd look positively wool-like!

I will post some pickies when I get a free moment, however I am stoked with this hat!

I received my Fed IV last Saturday after 6 weeks of waiting and am really happy since then. It has a much better Indy look than my old Miller, which I can now rebash for a YIJC look.
As a guide for my bash I took some LC and CS pictures and while I know it isn´t absolutely screen accurate I´m really happy with the bash :D Although since since I saw the pictures of Indiana Holt´s SOC Fed I´m playing with the idea of rebashing it.. argh I can´t stop
The pictures here are from a little photo session with my band a few days ago.

Okay folks, here are some snaps of my newly bashed Fed Dlx. I have incorporated a slight turn but without getting too much brim distortion.

This hat is so easy to bash and it keeps its shape very well so far. It is far taller than my AkAd and looks quite different (a good thing though) :D and might take a little getting used to.

I should mention that the size is perfect for my long oval shaped head (which sorta helps pull the sides in and gives it some reverse taper). 8)

That looks great Jones Boy! I get more and more the feeling I want to try this bash as well.
But maybe I´ll start with a tighter top pinch, like Holt suggested. Thanks for the nice comments!

Thanks Tremolo for your kind words. :)

I have the highest respect for Ron at Hatsdirect for getting this hat to us - the fans. Also the great fans of this site who provide the unselfish inspiration and guidance to the art of bashing (Aeris, Holt, fedora and co.)

The FED RULEZ!!!!

I've had mine for about a month now and I still catch myself just....looking at it.
Akubra's amazing ability to make quality hats has been going for 134 years, and this shows in The Fed.

Hatdirect's service was first rate also. I can't speak highly enough of the whole experience.

For anyone in the market, the choice is simple...GO THE FED :D

I've been on these boards for a few months now and I've read about all the love for the Fed IV. I thought to myself, "sure it looks good, but geez, it's just a hat!" Last week, after going back and forth between the Fed IV, and a couple other hats, I decided to go with the Fed IV.

A week to the day (today) I got a package in the mail from Australia. It took me longer to get the box open than it did to get my first bash done. I just know that I'll keep fiddling with it until I get it fine-tuned. This hat is so pretty I doubt I'll age it at all. I think my Indy costume might just turn out to be a mint condition Indy costume!

The pic truly doesn't do the hat justice.

Image

I seriously considered doing some sort of Raiders bash, but honestly, I think I'm too OCD for that. Every time I would look at it, I just know I'll say "that sure looks crooked!" I haven't ruled it out, so I guess we'll see.

I love this hat!!!

Alright. My FedIV Deluxe came last week. I've been pretty much just staring at it for the past few nights, afraid of my first bash. I bit the bullet and gave it a shot tonight. I have to get this right before the weekend. It is getting its debut at DragonCon so I want this as perfect as I can get it. Any advice would be welcome. I didn't really base this on any of the movie bashes, I just...well...bashed. I used steam to help things along.

a truly magnificent hat...Congrats in the choice..

Hey has anyone ever noticed that you could buy a regular, a regular Moonstone or Carbon Grey, AND Fed Deluxe, for less that the cost of a AB?

Sensational quality at a workingman's price..
Nice one HD and Akubra :D :D

Hello veteran COWer's I lurked for quite some time, particularly on this thread before ordering two Fed IVs. Been an Indy fan as long as I can remember and wore what I think is a dorfman pacific bought at Disneyland about the time the ride opened and wore it until I grew out of it (I was about 10 at the time). Wore it virtually everyday and it saw many adventures.

Anyway, about the time the new film came out I was pining about how I liked wearing a hat other then a baseball cap and my girlfriend asked me why I just didn't get a new fedora...

Image
Here is my fed and the original Disneyland hat, it really changed colors over the next 3 or 4 years of wearing.

I ordered a carbon grey and mid brown, wear the grey fed almost everyday, but I do not have a photo of it.
