Mink oil instead of Pecards?

Hi all,

what would I use to dress my leather jackets if there's no Pecards available? Would mink oil also be a good choice? Redwings e.g. come with it:

Thing is I have no chance to get Pecards over here.

I've heard that the mink oil can turn rancid over time, and make your jacket start to smell funky. I wouldn't do it.
Alternative: Get a friend here to ship some Pecards to you. If you have no friends here, I'd be glad to help you out.

I have used mink oil on my boots for as long as I can remember and I have never had them smell funky.

The only problem with mink oil is that it can be tough to get it all off the jacket, so the jacket can end up feeling greasy.

I like mink oil for my jacket; it does a good job of waterproofing and it helps soften the leather. In fact, I might put some more on it right now!

I believe it was the illustrious Michaelson who also pointed out that -- as an animal product -- you will find that mink oil attracts all manner of insects and mosquitoes as well.

I think Pecards is a recommendation that has stood the test of time for a reason. It's got a great reputation and has been around for decades!

Yep, use anything but a dressing made from animal byproducts, like mink or neatsfoot oils.

I had the same think happen YEARS ago with a knife sheaf. I found out the hard way....no one TOLD me back then.

Try not to use any product with petroleum distillates in it. They can breakdown and weaken the leather. Like Michaelson said.

I've never used Pecards, never even seen it actually. Since I got my first and only Indy jacket, I've only used one product on it (which the guy I bought it from included with it): Letap. Comes from the UK, and that stuff rocks my socks! Or rather, I use socks when applying it... but still, it's good stuff!

I have to give a public thanks out to Michaelson here. In response to my previous reply on this thread, our good buddy was kind enough to send me a couple of pecards samplers! So, THANKS MICHAELSON!!!!! They arrived today, and I must say this stuff is AMAZING! I just Pecarded my Wested Lamb, and can't wait for the weather to cool down so I can wear it! Throw out the idea of mink oil, this stuff'll do ya just fine

Pecards contains petroleum distillates, it says right on the side of the container.

Just saw that. WHERE did I say that?

I said don't use mink oil or any products with animal byproducts. I never said a thing about petroleum distilliates.

If it's pH balanced, there's no problem as it will not react to the leather, dye or chemicals used to tan the hide. It's THAT chemical reaction that causes leather to break down over time.

Pecards IS pH balanced, and it also says that in their paperwork.

So, Michaelson...how does one get oil from a neat's foot? And what exactly is a neat?

BTW, both Mary(on) and I send our best wishes. Though she may have mentioned it somewhere in here, we finally got hitched a year ago yesterday! Now Life has us back in CA...we'll see where it takes us!
