practical uses for a whip
i've always brought my old cowhide whip camping, it's great for getting dead braches down for fire wood. i wouldnt do that with my new DM though.
I've used my cowhide for MANY purposes in the past, but that will be even more so once my nylon comes in.
Pulling down firewood is a great idea. How about climbing up a sandy, slippery dune hill...and using a wrap to hang onto that handhold that is just out of reach.
Nylon is well suited for stuff like this, and leather can do alot of it too if treated properly.
My advice? Know the limits of your particular whip.
