TofD jacket question
I've located a jacket that I think will be a good base jacket for the TofD prototype to send to Wings. I've contacted a leather craftsman nearby who works on a lot of jackets (including other prototypes) and I'm going to be travelling to see him with the jacket and a spec sheet. I wanted to get input from everyone on one of the features of the TofD jacket: the side straps buckles.
The TofD jacket had a black, one-piece, two pronged buckle. The prongs were inserted directly into the leather strap. Fine for a movie jacket but it's given me pause as to its durability in a jacket designed for long term use.
So I've set up a poll to gauge the opinions of the members here on what they would like to see in the side strap buckle configuration. Let me clarify that by option 2 is that I thought eyelets could be put on the strap for the insertion of the prongs. Essentially the same configuration but should be much, more durable. I'm not even sure if this could be done but I wanted to throw it out there. If there are other viable options, lmk and I'll include them.
Discuss!

curious........why not just wait for wested's offering as they are studying the screen used jacket?
those pronged buckles are hard to find. i can't remember if they were roller buckles or if they were center bar buckles. if it's the latter (ie, same buckles as raiders, just with 2 prongs on them) i may be able to canabalize something for my order if wested can't source them.....and perhaps have 1 set left over for a buddy that helped me with my CS strap buckle

Are you saying that I should just wait to buy Wested's offering (nothing meant here, just making sure I understand what you're saying)?Indiana G wrote:curious........why not just wait for wested's offering as they are studying the screen used jacket?
If that's the case, then the inherent desire for me is to get a jacket as original to the movie jacket as possible from the original manufacturer. That was my desire when I stumbled into this project. That's the same desire that will fuel future Wested Raiders and LC purchases. And I think it's a desire that several on the boards expressed to have themselves.
I'm sure Westeds offering will be great, but that doesn't change the original desire that got everything rolling.

....so its all about the project....COOL
now i'm excited too. can't wait to see what you and wings come up with. i know they've got nice leather to choose from. if i can add my 2 cents........stay away from the chrome tanned leather and ask to have their current patterns "slimmed down". that should make for an awesome jacket....and perhaps others will follow in your footsteps
good luck and keep us posted!

The choice of leather will be a future poll.
The jacket I've found is a US Wing jacket that has already been tailored to be more of an 80s (re: tapered) fit (which is why I'm so glad to have found it as I thought that would be one of the bigger steps in getting a SA jacket). This also means that the yoke size is pretty accurate as well.
I'm going to meet with the jacket maker to correct such details as side vent construction, pocket size and placement, and strap buckles of course.

I've just mentioned this in a different thread but I'm going to say it again because this proves my point that despite the evidence on screen(and now confirmed by Indygear),people are still saying that the TOD jacket is slim fit .Can't we agree on ANYTHING? on COW?,how can the TOD jacket be loose AND slim at the same time?!!-has to be one or the other..I can't believe people are still debating what the lining of the Raiders jacket was made out of for goodness sake!,when _ took the time to examine an actual screenused jacket and record that information so that WE should not have to debate what it was made out of! How many years is this going to go on..?This is basic stuff that should have been sorted a long time ago..I mean if the facts on Indygear mainsite aren't enough, what is?..what was the point of all the hard work of researching and providing the FACTS so people can just go,"well,it looks slim to me"?or "it seemed fitted to me".Sorry for the rant, but I'm so tired of seeing good facts and information just ignored or dissapearing into the back pages of threads(or being replaced with subjective ideas) and then the same questions being asked over and over and over, that have already been answered(or proved).Don't belive me?,go back and look..3 years ago, same questions,on and on and on....Indiana G wrote: and ask to have their current patterns "slimmed down".
It was my understanding that the jacket wasn't slim or tight on Ford, in part, because he had lost 8 lbs or so from the fitting sessions but the cut of the jacket wasn't as full as what we see with LC and CS. So the jacket wasn't tight on Ford but it did have a more tapered design.
Am I wrong on this?

Past information posted has been based on personal observations and discussions, and for the most part, always HAVE been. 3 years ago most folks were still trying to use video frame grabs and a ruler to take measurements, for heavens sakes!
The current information, as now posted on the main site, are based on actual interviews with production participants and existing documentation proving those facts rather than just posting personal 'opinions'.
What's interesting is how close those personal observations were to the actual fact. Sure, there were misses, but not as many as you think.
So rather than being 'irritated', I'd be facinated in comparing what had been said years ago to what we know today based ON those interviews and paperwork and seeing how close they are to the truth.
Regards! Michaelson

If you are going ahead with this project, don't forget to "fix" the connection point of the collar/stormflap! This detail on the current Wings offering is way off.
We need some good screen shots from this movie to clarify. Anyone?
Also, the back panel needs to be lengthened at the top to meet the arm seams.

The main points I'm going to discuss with the jacket maker are:
1) Collar stand/storm flap attachment
2) Side vent configuration (this includes the placement of the side straps and what "fastener" to use)
3) Pocket size and placement
The yoke is pretty close on the jacket (by looks anyway, I'm getting out the tape measure later on). And, like I said, the jacket has already been altered to have a more tapered fit to the sleeves. The back panel actually meets at the arm sleeves and is slightly tapered, meaning a little larger at the top than at the bottom. I got the jacket off DougC (it was a project of his) and he's done a good job getting this started.
For photographs, Agent5 has posted a really comprehensive rundown of the TofD jacket over at Filmjackets.com that I've found invaluable.
Any other areas of I need to bring to the tailor's attention?

These are a little more toward the front than the screen caps I've seen. I'll mention that to the tailor and see what our options are.coronado3 wrote:crismans
How are the shoulder seams on your jacket? I had a us wings that had the seams toward the front of my shoulder (I could see them from the front) The correct TOD jacket has them toward the back...
