Your Favorite Whip?

Please post a pic of the favorite whip you own. Please include a description of why it is your favorite from you collection.

I have been trying to decide what is my favorite whip. I have only a few whips, but an affection for each. I finally settled on my Strain 8ft. I just love the way it feels (it is so solid). From day one it was awesome, but really it comes down to the weight of the whip and Joe's precision work.

It's really a toss-up between these two actually:

Edit: Oh I forgot to say why... Well they are both of a very similar style, but the 8 foot is easier to throw because it's smaller and lighter than the 10 footer. But it's got (strangely enough) a bigger butt at the end (this is a whip from a different "era" of my whipmaking... I've since learned how to make smaller knobs but with just as much weight in them, so they are more comfy in the hand over a long period of time. The 10 footer I love because it's like a real Indy whip and because it's slower movement lets me appreciate its areal grace more.

This is an 8 foot, 12 plait roo Indy.

Difficult to decide. Both are by Joe Strain. 8 footer is Whisky, 10 is Saddletan. Both are 12 plait.

The 8 footer:

It is really well broken in, and cracks effortlessly. I got it in 2003 (picture from 2005). It's now darker. Tight plaiting, quick action and good balance make it my go-to whip for showing off, or teaching somebody how to crack for the first time.

The 10 footer:

It's been here since 2004 (picture from 2005). It is long, but rolls out so satisfyingly easy, and gives a big BOOM even when you're not trying to. So much fun.

Can I say both?

I'd have to say that the Morgan whip is my favorite.

The Morgan cracks with very little effort and has a balance much to my liking. I can't really say the
same for the old dog hangin' beside it, though. It's very heavy, and the plaiting was poorly done.
Aw heck, it's almost 20 years old and was my first decent Indy-style whip at the time. The cool thing
is that it can still crack like a cannon! I'm gonna have to pick up a Strain someday - those things look
so slick. :junior:

( TurnerME, what'd you use for the fall on your whip? Just curious )

OK, I'm a little biased, since I only have one whip out of the dozen or so that I own that I didn't make....But the last one I made (the one I wore to the premiere, and cracked in the theater!!!) is really sweet. Just can't get over it.

It's a nylon 10', with billet aluminum handle, Stainless ball, and Aircraft cable core. The cracker is made from Spectra. It's only one belly, but dual bolsters...

No, it's not leather. But it is a darn fine whip, if I do say so myself.

Paul had made this whip for himself, but made the mistake of asking me what I thought of it. The knots weren't even on it yet. I made him finish it the way I wanted and sell it to me.

It keeps getting prettier and handles even better every single time I take it out.

It's a lot darker now. It sat out in the sun for a good while at Annie Oakley Days.

Come to think of it, so did I.

But it just looks a lot better.

I just look like a UK Tourist in Miami. The peeling has stopped though ;-)

So um.... would putting some SPF 30 or higher on your whip keep it from um.... tanning?

Here is my favorite. I own two fine whips; this one is my favorite by virtue of the fact that I have had 4 years to break it in and get used to it's action. It is a 12 plait 8ft roohide whip made by Bernie of EM-Brand whips. I can make it do things I have not yet been able to achieve as easily with my new 6ft whip.

This one is my favorite and it is the only one I have. Gus Caicedo custom cowhide.

Really great whip for the money. Once I have more money I will definitely turn to Paul or Lauren for a Roo whip.

My baby is my 2001 David Morgan #453 series 8-foot Special (with a custom shortened handle grip, and extra-smooth plaiting), made before David stopped taking custom request orders.
