Unfortunately this is not my hat. I wish it were!
I don't really know anything about it, but if I talk to Lee before you guys I'll make sure to get more info for you.
The crown is "just right". It's supposed to be taller than the Raiders hat. While the Herbert Johnson "Poet" is hardly the best choice for EVERYBODY, anyone who looks good in a Raiders hat will look terrific in this.
Do you think I could send my old Keppler back and have Lee replace the sweatband with that one? I love that it says Keppler Fedora! The hat looks amazing!
If you want to know the correct crown height or brim dimensions for the gray fedora in KotCS, just ask Steve. He made it. If it differs from this hat, then you know exactly how much it is off from the actual movie hat.
I don't quite understand the objections. Do you think the Keppler doesn't correctly copy the CS hat? Or, do you think the styling is off and doesn't match what appears onscreen? Or, do you just not like the hat itself because it's a high-crown Fedora that's just too tall?
Alright I have to say something..."accurate" or not I think this is a beautiful hat. That block, wow, perfect stovepipe. That's what I look for in a fedora. When I look at my vintage hats and see that perfect stovepipe look, I want all my hats to look like that. I have yet to really get my hands on an Indy fedora that has such a perfect look, in my opinion. My AB is in need of a major over hall , which will happen pretty soon I hope. Just by looking at this hat I want one. In fact I want a gray and standard Indy. As long as both of them have a stovepipe, no tapered block to them. I have owned a Keppler Indy for many many years now. I can tell you the quality is amazing. It's been through so much abuse I can't begin to tell you. I would never hesitate to purchase a lid from Lee. For me, I want my Indy hats to not only look Indy but to also look like a lid from the 1930's. Hats that have no taper and just simply look vintage. To me that high crown having no taper is a jewel.
I agree wholeheartedly. I was/am confused by the objections. The high crown is correct for the period, and super-elegant as well. My personal preference would be for a 22-ligne or even 24-ligne ribbon. That narrow ribbon is a Bernie Pollack request, so that's what is seen onscreen.
Let's face it, they are two different hats from two different hatters. Also, lol, we have to recognize that it is indeed hard to get an Indy hat to look "perfect".
I'm not here to really debate the accuracy of it. Yes, for this, the crown is a little too tall for the CS hat. I am a little partial to the look of high, untapered crowns. I thinks it a beautiful lid. If you want an exact CS lid we all know where to go for that. Regardless Lee will as well get you a tough lid.
BendingOak wrote:I'm just saying that it doesn't really copy the CS from the images posted here. I think the crown height of both hats are the same CS and keppler but the block that both hats where made on are different and that the keppler should have been lowered just a tad to compensate for that difference. This way the crown wouldn't look to tall.
please don't take me the wrong way. I'm not nocking Kepplers hat. I'm just giving my opinion. I think the crown looks to tall even though I think he got the crown height measurement spot on.
In case I wasn't clear - I think the hat looks great. I was just responding with my opinion regarding it's emulation of the CS travel hat. But in the end, a nice hat is a nice hat. And it's a nice hat.
The side dents could stand to be pushed back a little further (look at the two reference pics posted... the dents extend to the back edge of the bow knot) but it is a very pretty hat.
okay, sorry: gorgeous hat, the bash is off though. I think this fedora should easily pull off a CS bash, but what's up on those pics, doesn't seem CS screen accurate as far as bashes go.
That is my first one and was done REAL fast. Yes, the dents will go back more and it can be bashed shorter. Just let me know what you want. The felt is BB's new Expedition blend, a 5 3/4" crown (Grey) instead of 5 1/2" (brown), with standard size brim. I have a 7 1/8 and a 7 1/4 unsold. First come, first served! I'm glad you like my new effort. The Train Traveler or the China Clipper (5 1/2" crown) are orderable now, as they use black 1 1/2" ribbon.
They are the same. If the response is so I can order in large batches, it could change. The Train Traveler has a 5 3/4" crown with a different block and the China Clipper has a 5 1/2" crown with the Raiders block & bash. Bear in mind that the $20.00 difference is dinner for two at Jack in the Box!
If YOU want it, you should get it that way. I do think a true "eggplant" or more-likely named "Aubergine" would make a smashing color for a ribbon on this hat.
