US Wings Goat color

Post by Gunk »

I received my US Wings in Goat couple days ago and saw that it is REALLY dark...almost black...is this normal or did I get some type of "irregular" coat? The tag says brown

It's normal. Once the shine starts to wear off and it starts to break in, you'll see it's not black. Compare it to any pics of a G&B and you will see that dark brown nearly looks black.

Seeing pictures of it threw me as well. In my mind, even though I had watched the movie recently, the Raiders jacket was more of a milk chocolate brown. Watching the movie with the color in mind, you'll see that Indy's jacket is pretty dark.

Pretty much all goat skin jackets I've seen start very dark.

Is anyone else being really tempted by the goat being on sale for $297?

Mine arrived two weeks ago. I'll post some new pics but I'm starting to love the jacket as I've gotten it wet several times and put it in a no-heat dryer for about 8 hours. It's a beautiful jacket and a great deal for the price!

How does the USW Goat compare to the G&B Goat? (If anyone has both).

Both jackets come from companies with government contracts. The USW's I have seem extrememly well constructed. One came with Schott tags, the other with USW tags.

I'm sure people will say the G&B is more SA, but for $150 less the USW is a jacket that will last for decades of wear. That extra $150 could buy a Coyles or stay in the pocket!

I may get a G&B once the hype from the new movie cools, but not because I think it would be "better" than the USW, only because I gots ta have it...

they must have changed the leather source... my 3 year old USW is a really nice mid-brown. Very nice, light weight goat leather.

jacksdad, it seems like you never miss an opportunity to bash the USW you had! Once these jackets start to break in a bit the color will certainly come out. If you look at the color of a G&B, also sold as dark brown, it won't be much different than the USW. It's after a few months of wear that the nice dark chocolate color of these is very apparent.

My dark brown Seal G&B Expo is pretty dark as well. I thought they had accidently sent me a black one at first... I know, from experience, it will lighten up a bit though.

Hey I like US WINGS I just was disapointed with the Indy jacket, I have an A-2 and a khaki shirt and I'm happy with both, what I saw in the old photo is what I thought I was getting, it wasn't untill recently did they change from the miltary organge to the brown or black linning.Opinions vary, I just wasn't happy with my purchase, it wasn't a shot at wings or Sarge.

The first jacket that I got when I found out about this place in 1999 was a US Wings goatskin. That was a long time ago. Nothing about my jacket from back then would be the same as one from today, other than jacket construction and that sort of thing. Every jacket maker's jackets will be somewhat different from year to year just based on the batch of leather that they're currently making their jackets from.

With that in mind, the leather on mine was of high quality. In fact I've never heard of goatskin from Wested, USW, or Gibson & Barnes ever not being of high quality. But whenever you buy a leather jacket you’re always getting the luck of the draw, unless you know for a fact that a maker is making jackets from a batch of leather that you particularly like (My last G&B Expedition for instance has the nicest goatskin that I’ve ever had on an Indy jacket.)

USW uses a different lining material now than they did on my old jacket, so I can’t give you an opinion there.

What I can give you an opinion on is jacket construction. Wings jackets are built tough. They are built tougher than a Wested. They are built tougher than a Todd’s. They are not built tougher than a G&B Expedition. It would be hard to say (and pointless to a degree) which of the two was built tougher. What the Expedition has over the USW’s is elegance. It’s a smoother jacket, and yet it is as rugged as a box of nails. I also like the cut of it better than I USW’s. You get sized better with an Expedition. Wings is S,M,L,XL,XXL. G&B is suit sizes.

An other thing to keep in mind is the details of the jackets are different. I like the collar on the Expedition more than that on the Wings. I like the rectangular loops on the Expedition better than the D-rings on a Wings. Cheers

I should also point at that G&B offers goatskin in two colors. The dark seal/dark brown is standard. But you can also get light seal/light brown. Wested also offer goatskin in two browns. Cheers
