Depp has at least one hat with a very thin ribbon. With the brim snapped up like that, you wouldn't see it. I've said it before, though, that Depp wears some of the nicest hats out there.

I'm glad to see there are some folks in Hollywood that stand behind their word. I've always liked Depp as an actor. Seems like you can like him as a person of his word, also.

Thanks for posting.. nice to see "good" Hollywood for a change.

P.S. Agreed.. he does wear some cool hats.

(scribbling on paper)

"Dear Mr. Ford..."

That really is cool. The kid looks like he's enjoying the hat, too!

That kid needs to get poked. A bit of a spoiled brat.
Johnny's really a gentleman and a scholar, though.

Awww! Thats so awesome. I wonder how the people who read the emails knew the story was true. Lucky kid, but even nicer of Johnny to keep his promise.

The article on People.com implies the hat little Jack received was one of the hats Depp wears in the film, since he met Depp on the set while they were shooting on location. If that's true, it's not only a Johnny Depp hat, it's a screen-used Johnny Depp hat. :D

I think it shows a level of class and integrity that Depp would make good on his promise, and it sets a good example for boy. And it was thoughful to include items for the other members of Jack's family. Nice to know there are celebrities who aren't egocentric imbeciles.

Gotta agree with all those who posted here - a real class act for Depp to give up a hat for a kid like that...although the parents really gotta reign that kid in. :junior: -M

There's some good guys out there still.

Say what you will about Colin Farell, but when he was in Toronto last year for the Toronto International Film Festival a homeless man asked for a few bucks, not knowing who he was.

Farell took him out, bought him lunch, got him cleaned up and bought him over $1,000 of new clothes and outdoor gear to survive the long, Canadian winter.

Boak: People here ask for stuff as a joke, or to help them decide between a DP and a FedIV, not for a vintage borsalino  it's just a bit forward and impolite.

If only those so hard on the Little Brat were as "critical" of Mr. Depp and his views on America and the millions who fund his aristocratic lifestyle in France.

I like this quote from the article:

"We don't need to hear about Paris Hilton not wearing clothes, we need to hear about Depp doing something for a kid for no reason."

I'm not sure we actually need to hear about either of these things, but I like how the point is made. :)

trust me- kids have no inhibitions when it comes to material gain. Any kid will ask anyone "can I have it?"

I would rather see Paris Hilton with no clothes than Johnny Depp do anything with his hat. 8) I'm just sayin'.

Sounds like some fan sent him a hat he didn't like and he sent it to the kid. After seeing the hat, I can't say that I blame him.

(First Post!)
I live about an hour's drive from Oshkosh, WI, where Johnny Depp was filming "Public Enemies" for several days in April. It does not surprise me at all that Mr. Depp gave away one of his hats just because a kid asked for it. I waited in the "meet and greet" line on two of the nights after filming, and Johnny showed his graciousness both nights by coming out and meeting the fans. He was quickly walking and shaking hands down the line, but whenever he saw a child, he would take a little extra time.

I don't have children, but while I was waiting, a young girl somehow squeezed through the crowd and ended up sitting on my foot. When Mr. Depp came by, he saw the girl, stopped, knelt down in front of me and started talking with her. Meanwhile I'm looking down and all I can see is the top of his fedora!! As soon as he stood up, he was face to face with me and I thanked him for coming out to meet us. He shook my hand and replied with "Well, thank you, sir!".

It was a great experience, plus I got a very close up look at the top of Johnny's fedora. Here is a picture I took of Johnny greeting the next person in line: (Definitely not the same fedora he gave the kid)

I think everybody debating the authencity of the hat somehow missed this part of the article...
While the family is "1,000 percent positive" the fedora is not the same hat Depp was wearing that day, it is tattered and shows signs of wear.

Yeah, Mr. Depp is in need of some good publicity ever since his anti-American comments...

Nice for the kid, but he is still a &*$% IMO.

I think that happened a year or two ago. He's since recanted, and/or said he was 'grossly misquoted' by the French press, and it went around the world that way. I've read it explained both ways in later articles.

Would it be bad taste to say I would rather ask for Keira herself than her wardrobe?

Anyway, Nice of Johnny to give the kid his hat. Even if it was not the hat the kid asked for, he really showed he cares for the fans.

Given his generosity in this situation, I suppose it's fitting he'll be playing The Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's upcoming film version of Alice In Wonderland.
