Ordering a David Morgan Whip from the U.K.

Post by GeordieIndy »

Hi,

I have a question to fellow U.K. COW members.

I am hoping to be ordering a David Morgan whip over the next few weeks and was wondering if many of you got hit with crazy import taxes and if so do you have any suggestions before placing an order??

Thanks,

I have a vintage Morgan on sale right now - it's in Europe so no tax, and was made by Morgan himself while he was still making great whips. His later whips wern't quite as good, and anyway he's retired now.
Tax can be hefty - when i ordered fro Morgan a couple of years ago I ended up paying another couple of hundred dollars. That was in Austria - not sure how much it'd be for the UK.

Hi Whiskeyman,

Just checked out your whip, it's a very nice whip but just a little pricey for me, sorry!

I might have to see if I can get a whip sent to some friends in the U.S. and get them to send it to me, see if I can dodge the hefty tax this way!

Thanks,

I wouldn't bet on it if you give the value for an item, which you would need to if it was still to be insured the tax man would still get you. Only 2 things are certain in life...death and taxes :twisted:

And what is it with COW'ers and dodging taxes? If I were to purchase any item I accept the monetary responsibility that comes with the item. Although much more minor, I don't try and get out of paying taxes levied in other states not levied in mine because people, all people, are required to pay them. I'm no more special then anyone else that I think I can get out of paying an extra penalty which comes by location or item. Don't try and find away out of it, just go though it and do as so many others have to. Just my .02

Hey,

I don't want to cause any arguments here and I appreciate what everyone is saying, freedom of speech and everything.

So please, if anyone has any advice to my original question can we just stick to that :!:

Thanks,

Hey im just foolin around there meant it as some friendly banter :oops: ...but it's my experience from items I have purchased from America that you will have to pay tax, to my knowledge there is no way of getting around it. Have you tried emailing David Morgan just to see If they can help you out and give you some specifics on import taxes and stuff

In the last few months, more then just this thread has wondered "Hey how can I beat taxes on a whip/hat/jacket". It's not the first time, and I doubt it will be the last. I find it interesting, that's all. My advice is pay the tax.

Uk tax.....

1/ the price of the whip...
2/ the price of the postage

add to this 17.5%

3/ now add to the price of the whip, the postage and the 17.5%...
a further 2.5%....

Insulted?????

Now add on £13.00 that the post office charge you for paying the duty on your behalf....

If it comes UPS add £11.00.,...

Other couriers charge even more......

Look at adding the best part of £100.00 onto the price of your Morgan whip... :(

This really got me spitting nut's and bolts about import duty, prompted by my answer above I thought I'd actually do the calculation and see how it turned out......

Morgan 10 foot Indy $865.00

Shipping $40.00

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Using Google currency converter....
$865.00 = £433.88
$40.00 = £20.64
Total = £454.52
:o :o
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

V.A.T @ 17.5% = £79.54
the whip now costs £534.06
:o :o
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Import duty @ 2.5% = £13.35
the whip now costs £547.41
:o :o
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Royal Mail delivery charge = £13 + V.A.T total = £15.27
the whip now costs £562.68
:o :o
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Huge difference.......
£128.80......... :( :(
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Get Paul Nolan to do you one, it'll be cheaper and a much much better whip IMHO......

Hey,

Thanks for all the calculations Tony :!: That's why I posted this topic, I know from past experiences you can get totally hammered with taxes and charges, I just wasn't sure how much it would be.

Aviator - You're not wrong about only 2 things being cerftain in life - death & taxes!! Ha Ha

Hollywood - It's not that I am a total tax dodger, but I hope you can see my point when you look at the calcuations above! Surely it would annoy you just a little....

Thanks for all your imput :!:

All the more reason to grab one that's already in Europe. No further taxes.

Not only that, but if you're buying something secondhand, the taxes are ( should have been ) paid. Double taxation? Someone might start a revolution :idea: . Happy Fourth of July!

Well, maybe :wink:
Seriously though, if you're really set on a Morgan I feel obliged to point mine out to you. I've owned modern morgans and there not a patch on the old ones. And now of course, David isn't even making them himself!

It's on ebay with no reserve, you might get it for a low price.

I'll stop hawking now :D

Man - those import duties and fees are nuts! If you've really got your heart set
on picking up a new Morgan whip, I'd order and pay for one but have them keep
it in their shop when it's finished - then plan a vacation to Seattle and pick up your
whip in person ( you might even get to meet the man! ) I'm not sure about how the
law works in the U.K. when bringing in something from overseas in your luggage,
though. Do they ding you with fees after landing at Heathrow? Just thinking out loud.

Whatever happens, I hope you'll be able to get you hands on one of those whips
sometime in the near future - keep checking around home & the European Market. :junior:

For those of you who have shipped a whip from the US to the UK how did you ship it (what company and how) I went to UPS today to find out and they said that UPS international to the UK with signature release and insurance would be about $193 us. woundering if there is a cheaper way that I can ship it.

Keep Cracking

James, a flat rate priority mail by USPS to the UK should be $38.95. Go to http://www.usps.com/prices/priority-mai ... ices.htm#U
