Now I know how Belloq felt when he couldn't take his eyes off the inside of the ark...
My Fed IV arrived today.....AND I JUST CAN'T STOP LOOKING AT IT.
It's like I own a movie icon.
It does appear to be shorter than most of the Federation IVs I've seen. It may just be me, but I also see a bit of minor taper in the hat. Maybe its the photo though.
The size of the Fed IV's open crown is 5 1/2", maybe a tad larger because I just measured mine, just like the actual one Ford used in Raiders. I think the look of the "height" of the hat depends on the size of it. For example, a size 59 would look a lot taller than a larger size because it's skinnier. I think the photos have a lot to do with it, too.

Could be the center dent is too deep. That will not only make it shorter, but it will also put taper into it. And then again, it could just be a bad camera angle/distortion. Regardless, ya' gotta love a Fed, they are nice hats.
By how rounded the top looks front the front and profile, I think it's the case that center dent goes down too far in the front. With the center dent in place, it should be just over 4.5 inches. at the pinch. From the profile, there shouldn't be so much curve at the front of the hat.

That hat isn't tapered.
Look at the first pic. What you're seeing is the centre dent has been brought deeper in the front, while the back sits a little higher. Overall it looks like the KotCS hat just with a tight, Raiders-ish pinch.
In any case, congrats. You should be well happy with it.

It looks much better front, but to my eye, the side angle shot makes the dent look too low. It all depends on what you like. If you think it looks great, then who can tell you it doesn't? Either way, you have a great hat that will last you for a long time and you will share many adventures with. What more can a guy ask for?
Agree with all of the comments here - particularly w.r.t. the centre bash potentially being too deep and dragging the sides in.
Another point to get the 'boxy' look that the SOC/Idol Grab is characteristic for is to sharpen up the front dents at the top/back of the dent, closer the the crown of the hat. A broad deep dent will tend to make things look more rounded (and to some eyes tapered).
I will post a couple of pics of one of my Feds with a similar bash to what I am describing.
Other than that a top hat and good all round bash.
Good to see a few more of us online . I just got to work and realised that the photos of my fed I was going to post are on my other camera Bxgger!!
I will have to post them this evening or thereabouts.
Oh and by the way I just pulled the trigger on a Fed Dlx (can't wait ), only there will be a bit of a wait - something to do with a bung batch of felt.
I think you improved it from your first try at the crease job. The thing about any hat is there is a little bit of art involved at pulling off the Raiders crease. Right now, I think you need to work on the camel humps on the top, to round them over a bit more.
Having owned a Fed 4, I know it does make a good Raiders fedora, its all with the stylist. I crease em, without even thinking about it these days, but once upon a time, I had a hard time getting the creases just right. There is a learning curve involved. Fedora
Your center dent is to wide. Try going to the inside of the hat with one hand and put your fingers in the center dent on the outside of the hat and grab your fingers with the hand inside the hat.
