My attempt at an Indy Straw

Post by Dakota Ellison »

I found a couple of old straw hats in the attic a few days ago. One was an old Indy straw in a loose natural color weave that was beyond saving except the sweat was in good condition and it still had the Indy plane sticker inside. The other hat was a panama from Country Gentleman bought at Macy's for $25, years ago. I took the Indy sweat and put it on on a stretcher as it was too small, pealed off the sticker and threw the straw away. Then I stripped the CG of it's cloth sweat and one inch ribbon and
soaked in cold water for half an hour. Using a plastic 5 gallon bucket, I filled it with hot water and poured in RIT dye: 2 packets dark brown, 1 dark green, 1 yellow. I immersed the CG for about an hour, stirring occasionally. Rinsed in cold water for 15 minutes, put on one of my blocks until dry, shaped and sewed in the sweat from the old Indy, glued the patch, and sewed on a different ribbon. Turned out pretty good.

Say, that's not half bad! I like the "authenticity" that the label and the logo on the sweatband bring to it. Strong work!
