JPD on order!
I am very happy to say that my first custom Indy fedora is on order from Jimmy. I just got off the phone with him a few minutes ago (super nice guy!) and he said it'd be here in about 6 weeks. After seeing all the awesome looking JPD's on here, I couldn't be more excited. Thanks Jimmy!

The south american felt comes from Cury, a supposed supplier to herbert Johnson in the early 80s. The U.S. felt comes from winchester, where at least 90% of custom hatters in the U.S. get their felt. THe Winchester felt is a standard dress weight body, approx. 4.5 oz. The Cury felt is heavier, because I ordered it that way, approx 6 oz. or comparison, a standard western hat is about 8 oz. The cury is also slightly less dense. This actually aides in have a slightly thicker felt that is still flexible. While your everyday hat wearer might possibly realize there is something different other than thickness, the will most likely not know what that other thing is.
If you put a bunch of steam to the Cury, or soak it and manipulate the felt it is more likely to shrink than the winchester. I have not had a problem with getting it wet and letting it dry without manipulating the felt, or using just enough steam to soften the felt and shaping it, with out it shrinking. But it is not as forgiving at the Winchester felt. That said, it seems to be more durable. Tapering and durability are two different things, though most people seem to lump them together. A hat can taper and still take a beating without tearing. that being said, If you do not soak it and try to reshape it, and if you do not try to over steam it, it is a perfectly servicable hat.
I have found that I can do odd things with it. I have a concentrated high pressure steam spot and can shrink just parts of the hat if the shape calls for it. If I over steam just on the sides, right above the ribbon those spots will shrink and sink in, it developes a great mushroom effect. I also use this felt for a Good, bad, and Ugly hat for this reason. It is easy to make look beat up, But sill have a strong hat. Oh, and takes bullet holes well.

Yeah, beaver hats can be very addictive. I don't own one by Jimmy, but my collection is mainly 100% beaver hats.genphideaux wrote:I sometimes wish I had gotten a rabbit first just to see the difference but after the months of wearing the 100% beaver I fear this will never happen. Not that I’m upset or anything.
However, I find Jimmy's rabbit felt has a better finish than most, and I can almost forget that it's not beaver.
My JPD is one of his beaver hats.

I really like it. It's held up well in the rain and other abuse I've put it through here in the Pacific NW.
But Michaelson is right, its hard to tell the differences via pictures. You really have to see them in person to compare. I know it's more expensive, but I'd go with the beaver again in a heartbeat. In fact, I'm kinda thinking about talking to Jimmy about a CS-style hat in beaver.
I'd be more than happy to take other pictures if there's something specific you'd like to see...

Well I'm glad to know that the $125 hat is still available. Now the big question is, which is the better one to go with the South American felt or the rabbit?

Gabrielle,
When I ordered my hat, I was most interested in the tight front pinch, but other than that, I just asked Jimmy to give me his best generic ROTLA look, and that's what I got.
No, I haven't done any bashing of it myself. I have learned over the years that the more I "Play" with something that was set, the quicker it becomes unable to return to it original condition. So I leave things alone; although I have tweaked the brim in back a little to give more "curve" to the brim when seen in profile (i.e. the arc it makes front to back on your head).
