Optimo Hat - Anyone Buy Recently ?

Post by Got Maul »

My first Indy hat was Optimo (thanks to Jason) and I fell in love with it. The only issue I ever had with it was that I stupidly got my head measured before a much needed haircut. As a result my fedora was always a little loose for me and it ALWAYS bothered me.

Has anyone ordered from them recently ? Do they still have Indy Brown and have any improvements changes been made since about four years ago ?

Haven't heard of them lately with all this new Indy buzz happening. Best bet is to get yourself a Federation IV. I love mine so much I may be in Indy more than my Spartan this year

Classic Brown vs. Tobacco

Where can one find an accurate representation of both colors?

Graham makes a great hat. The attention to detail back when I bought mine was outstanding. I think he even upgraded his stock felt after dealing with the fans here. And unlike myself, Graham makes every kind of hat imaginable. A full service hatter. Fedora

Just a tip Alex - we've had talks about this sort of thing before on COW and the general consensus is that if a person tries to ask about one type of hat, you aren't supposed to railroad them into another.

@GM - yeah, I remember Optimo's were big a while back, before the AB came out. Never actually got one myself. I'd sure love to though. :junior: -M

You'll probably find more Optimo customers over at the Fedora Lounge. As Steve says, he's a full service hatter, not an Indy "specialist". With so many other Indy offerings, I guess his main business is with non-Indy hat wearers, now.

So I called them on Friday and alas, they no longer carry Indy Brown. What Tiffany did tell me was that they are coming out with a very close brown soon. They are just getting it in.

I wonder which color this is...I didn't get a chance to speak to Graham nor did I get to ask what their prices are now a days.

Something else you may want to look into... Depending on how loose the hat is (for example, a whole hat size, half a size) Graham might be able to re-size it for you. I've never had it done myself, but I believe I've heard of some people having hats resized.

No worries, Alex. While I can't speak for Mulceber, we've just had a lot of threads in the past where person A asks a question about one hat, and person B posts, telling them that their "best bet" is another hat that person B happens to like for whatever reason, instead of talking about the hat that person A asked about.

It's just a little friendly advice, since you're still relatively new to the forums here. :)

Now as far as Optimo, I held one of Indiana Guy Brush's Optimos not too long ago, and it was a wonderful hat. The felt was thin and floppy, but held it's shape. It looked and felt very Indy. This was at a QM summit, though, so it was just a little while back. When did you get your Optimo, GM?

Polite Conversation and the Question of HOW MUCH

Post by YARVTON »

In many of the recent Fedora threads its often mentioned "for a hundred dollars more..." you could have...

So in this discussion about Optimo, I wondered if anyone has a recent price quote. Seems to be THE most expensive of the Indy hats, though I may be somewhat confused.

My brother gave my father an Optimo fedora (non-Indy) as a present within the last couple of years. He loves it. Of course my parents were stunned by the price. But then that would be expected for people whose fathers lost houses in the depression, they are quite frugal.

I got a chance to see it when I was home for Father's Day. It is a very nice, well made hat. It is just too low a crown for my taste, but then it wasn't made for me!

I have had an Optimo for a number of years. I think they do first rate work and I hope they get the color you want soon.

Good luck

It does indeed look like the Christys', and I think that may simply be a function of quality hats ( and not being stuck in the flavor of the month ). One thing I would never trade however, had I the money, is the satisfaction of the interaction with a craftsman and receiving something that is wholly yours. If you go the Optimo route, you will certainly join the ranks of those I envy in such a personal purchase. Not just the distinction of being a "hat wearer", but a CUSTOM hat wearer!

Batman would never wear a fedora. Bruce Wayne would, though...I'm just busting your chops. I know what you meant though. Plus, Batman's horns don't really complement a hat. I am not the only one uber excited about The Dark Knight am I? I am a huge Batman fan.

I got mine about 3-4 years ago when they had Indy Brown in. It cost me $399 at the time. Its soft and holds firm just like the true Indy hat...its the best hat I have ever owned and can never think of getting anything else outside of it.
