What' I'd recommend is that you measure your head and send that number to Hatsdirect. They're usually pretty good at getting your size right on. Either that or go to a good hatter in your area and let them tell you what size you are.

Personally I wouldn't trust a BB hat size for a fedora.

If you're going to email hatsdirect they require two measurements from you. They want to know the measurement of the tape measure as it fits snug, yet comfortable around your head. Second, they want the measurement as you pull the tape as tight around your head as you can get. I measured around my head exactly as a hat would sit on my head. Email them those 2 measurements and they will tell you what size is best for you.

I just got my Fed IV in and I ordered it at a 58. My head measured 22 1/4 inches. Hope that helps.

Yep, be sure to measure your head with a tailors tape and e-mail them with that measurement. They should be able to get you the size your looking for.
Also, if you want to know your US hat size, just take your measurement and divide it by PI (3.141592654).

Cheers!

that's it throw your education in our faces! haha  I haven't had very good success with the head measuring. I just went to a western shop and tried on a bunch of hats to get my US size.. as it was with measurements I thought I was a quarter size larger.. which swam on my head.. But the hatsdirect people do this for a living so it'd be good.. plus all the folks saying that worked for them. I'd trust em.

By way of example, I used a tailor's measuring tape as advised on the Hats Direct website, and wrapped it around my head where I wanted the hatband to rest; snug, but not tight. I measured three times and came up with 60 cm each time, so that's the size I ordered. The hat I received was a little loose right out of the carton, but after wearing it a few days it snugged up to a perfect fit. Hope this helps!

do you think a shrunken 60 would still be too loose for a 59?

I think so. I have a shrunken 60 Fed IV standard. My brother borrowed it to wear a few days ago. I thought we had the same hat size because he tried it on and said that it fit. But while he was at school, he said that the wind blew the hat off his head once.
