A Hatmaker's Resource

Post by mufflowne »

So since there's a few rookie hatmakers around the boards, myself included, I'd like to start collecting data and info about diferrent suppliers.

The Hat Supply: http://www.hatsupply.com/
They sell just about everything you may need to make your own hat.

http://www.textilesburcal.com/
Sell great looking raw bodies. (Bolivia)

http://www.hatsuk.com/furfelthood.htm
List of Hat Body manufacturers.

http://www.jaygerish.com/felt.htm
This guy sells good looking bodies as well.

What are your guys's experiences with diferrent body suppliers? Where's the best beaver from? Anyone PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE know where to get a ROO sweatband?

Thanks for those resourses, those will be helpful. Yes, now if we can find that resourse for the roo sweatband we'd be golden. :D

Cheers!

If you were to buy liners how would you be able to get a personalised crest or logo on it?

Printable silk. There is a silk out there that is printable on an ink jet printer.
One of the folks either here or over at the Fedora Lounge did it for one of the hats that they made. Also, if you have access to a computerized sewing machine you could embroider your logo into the crown of the liner. It isn't as hard as it sounds.

Cheers!

I know there are a few members here who know where to get them. It's only a matter of pride and their fear of competition (unjustified) which would make them conceal the source.

You can also use paint for fabric (like I did), in order to customize your lining

It's just a never ending quest from one thing to the next. Hey, at least we're taking the time to educate ourselves and have a better understanding of an almost lost craft.

Cheers!

Does anyone know if there's any issues from Chrome Tanned to Veg Tanned hide and if (and what with) should the hide be prepared in order to use as a sweatband?
