Fedora Fest - The Sting

Post by BoilermakerJones »

I just finished watching "The Sting" for the first time in years, and really enjoyed checking out all the fedoras that were worn in the movie.

There were several scenes where Robert Redford wore a hat that was eerily like something Indy would have worn in Raiders. It had a very tight pinch all the way up the front.

I only saw that movie for the first time about a year ago (and again on TV earlier today). I definitely noticed the tight pinch when I watched it, too. Classic movie - classic costumes.

I remember first seeing Paul Newman's hat in the movie thinking that it could definitely be done with an Akubra Federation.

Just rewatched Godfather II In the flashback scenes with DeNiro as young Vito, the local shake-down Black Hand guy is, "Fannuci." Fannuci's hat is a Silver Belly or even white, but it has a tight, "Raiders," pinch.

Until Raiders came out, this was my all time favorite film. It got me started playing ragtime on the piano.

I just saw this for the first time last year and it was so good I was upset I'd missed it all those years. I should have known cuz' "Butch Cassidy/Sundance Kid" is one of my all-time favorites as well. George Roy Hill had several great films I loved including "The Great Waldo Pepper" and "World According To Garp."
