Alden sole wear

Post by Lottig »

I was wondering what all you with Aldens have experienced as far as sole wear, I had my pair for about 7 monthes and needed a resole, which I got about a month ago at a local shop. They did a 3/4 resole and new heels and once again I see wear. So my question is how many times can they be resoled?

Thge number of time they can be resoled depends on who does it. Some people who do resoling will pull the vamp tighter so that the new stitching goes in just inside where to olde stitching row was. this makes the boot a little tighter. This makes it so that a boot has to be restreched or even relasted(not shure is that is the real term but they will have to be put on a last again). Eventually you would increase the space where the boots are laced. Some boot workers will adjust there machines to the same spacing as the previous stiching in the boot and restitsch in the same line. When it is doon like this then the boot doesn't get tighter. As long as the sole is cut right they should fit exactly the same.

This all really pretains to cowboy boots. But the construction is the same with the welt sole. I asked a boot make and he said this would all be the same if it was a boot like an alden.

As long as the uppers will support re-soleing, it can pretty much be done indefinately. I've had several pairs of Aldens, all of which have been resoled numerous times. The only reason why they can't be re-soled would be that the leather is in such a poor condition that there is no way to attach the new sole.

I have had the heels replaced once and they are getting ready to make another trip to the shop. Other than that, the sole is still in great shape.

Well, all I can offer is that I've worn mine almost non-stop for over 3 years now....had 3 sets of heels put on, but have the original soles. I have a replacement set of soles to put on, but my cobbler said I had MILES left on my originals. Regards. Michaelson

The soles of mine lasted about a year. I need to send them off soon to the Alden shop to get them resoled. A year seems to be the sole life of any shoe I've owned.

Sure, Jess, but if you'd stop dragging your feet, they'd last a WHOLE lot longer. (grins) Regards. Michaelson

It's not 'dragging', it's the "Gentleman Jack shuffle". (hic)

I currently own a pair from 1989 which have been resoled a few times but are still in perfect working order.

Jess, the 'Gentleman Jack shuffle'? That makes no sense. Last time I drug you out of a bar, it was your heels that got worn down the most. :-k  Regards. Michaelson

Is it possible to get originally heels from Alden? They do have a particulary shape that I would like to keep when the time of replacement is due.

Best regards
