dp fur felt fedora opinions

Post by manu7 »

ok i know everyones opinions on the dp's themselves but i dont want to spend more than a 100 on a hat i wont wear that often. to all those that do own the dp fur felt how is the hat? have you tried re-bashing it and how well did that go? i have the wool crushable dp but want the raw edge i have rebashed the wool with ok results but it always seems to work its way back to the shape it can which i guess it is suppose to. does the fur felt hold your re-bash? and how stiff is the hat itself. have only ever owned a crushable fedora so dont know how stiff they actually are. also are the dp's not as tall as the other companies? dont really want a tall type hat. thanks for any input in advance

Go for the Akubra Federation IV, around $100. Forget the DP, please stay away, you have been warned...

I personally really like the $40 Dorfman Pacifics..

Man to most people $40 is a ton of money so as a souveneir hat designed to look like Indy's it looks great

Image

I mean the ovals around the pinch (what are those called? the bash?) are clearly artificial and set in place but otherwise it looks good

I had one from Disneyland and it was really a nice hat before it became too small for my head.

It is a unique model sold only by HatsDirect.

Consider a Lee Kepler hat.

If you're interested I have a Dorkman, ahhhhh, Dorfman crushable on the Cairo Bazaar for $25.00. It's water resistant and styled to look vintage, already dusted up and worn, in mint condition.

yes, thr Fed 4 is an awesome hat, but $135 with shipping. A fur felt DP can be had shipped for around $90. IF that's your ceiling, and you want a lower crown, go for it. I had one and I liked it. I actually plan on getting another eventually (that fits). It's re-shapeable, but just keep in mind the lower crown, and that the pinch will be a little shorter because of this. The hat itself is pretty nice- the felt is soft, nice leather ventilated sweatband, liner sewn in.

I don't own one, but I've had personal contact. As you know, it's not popular. However, it is not the complete waste of money that everyone makes it out to be. Actually, considering the price, if you're not after a particularly accurate hat, or you don't plan to abuse it, the fur felt DP is not that bad. It's about on par with a Stetson Temple (which most will tell you also garbage, but it's a great lid for occasional wear). It also cost less than the Temple in most places.

The fur felt will hold it's shape better, especially if you use a little water or steam (not too much, you don't want to cause a shrink-fest). The ones I've seen were old and soft, but I think they start out a little on the stiff side. Wear it in light rain a couple of times, and it should soften up.

One additional word of advice about reshaping a DP - don't go for the Raiders tight creased pinch. Stick with a ToD or LC look. The Raiders pinch will cause a hideous taper.

Because people shopping at savemart or disneyland think $30-40 is expensive, let alone $130, for a hat

If your going for something like the Dorfman or the Stetson, you might as well get the Stetson. This info was on Indyfan.com:
Let me tell you guys, the Stetson Nostalgia has to be the BEST fedora I have owned to date. I just went back yesterday and got another. I have said it before, but the factory outlet has the BEST prices anywhere around as well. Both my hats put together in price still cost less than what I have seen this model priced at on the web, be it Millerhats or any one. Just $25.99 folks... I am soooo satisfied with the quality of this fine fur-felt fedora. The size specifications are exactly the same as what is posted on the Diggs site for the Herbert Johnson Hat. They state the ribbon may be a little wide, but this model hat comes with several different ribbon widths and colors. Mine measured out exactly the same as the coveted Petersham(sp?) ribbon. And because this fedora is open-crowned or unbashed, I was able to form it PRECISELY the way it appears in the films. ...This is an EXCELLENT alternative for those of us who cannot afford the HJ or White hats. Also each hat is an expression of you because you form it yourself. ...if you don't live in the Midwest you can contact the Stetson factory oulet and they will have your fedora delivered. All you have to know is your size (ie. 6 7/8, 7 1/4 etc..*), the color you want, and the model fedora you are looking for. They are the exactly the same hats as are sold by retailers throughout the country. Most of their product line comes from overstock or items not purchased by retailers."

Stetson Factory Outlet Store
St. Joseph, MO

(816) 233-3286

They accept both Credit Cards or checks, however with checks they cannot ship until it clears. I know this sounds like a pain in the rear, but their prices are phenominal. As I mentioned before the Temple and Nostalgia fedoras were priced at only $25.99, so even with shipping it still beats the prices anywhere I have looked.
They DO take phone orders, however being an outlet store, they do not have a catalog. If you know a particular hat style by name(ie. Stetson "Temple" Fedora or Stetson "Nostalgia" Fedora), they can make arrangements to ship it to you. Again, being an outlet store they do not have a shipping department and you will have to go through a company called:

One Stop Shipping
(816) 232-2669

Inform them that you have an item for pick-up. I haven't used them before, so I don't know specifics such as shipping charges and delivery times. As far as where One Stop Shipping delivers you will have to contact them, I do know that they deliver anywhere in the US.

Go for a Christy's adventurer wool. It's not fur, but a #### of lot more SA than a DP.

Yeah, the Nostalgia is a good option. I forget about the outlet store all the time. But the Nostalgia is about to be re-released, and is a far better choice than the Temple. I didn't mention it because it's going for around $140 or more retail.

This info is several years old...I called them earlier this year and the temples were running about $60 bucks and shipping about $12. -and that was for a factory 'second'. A 'retail' quality was $99.00 (no flaws)
