Christy's Adventurer vs. Akubra Federation IV

Post by DR Ulloa »

I am in the market for another fedora and have whittled it down to two: the Christy's Adventurer and the Akubra Federation IV. I am looking for insight on these two hats. I know there are other out there. I don't want to know about AB, HJ, Camptown, or anything else. I know about them and have an AB on order. I am looking specifically for information on these two. If anyone owns or has owned both, I would like to know what you think about them. Thanks guys.

DR Ulloa, I could not go past the Fed IV. I purchased one each for my boys (size 54 and 58) and could not fault the service (even when one had to be sent back for a re-size), delivery time (one week here in Western Australia - might as well be O/S for the rest of Australia) and most of all the quality of the hat that Ken (via Akubra) turns out.

Both hats have styled perfectly - the 54 to a LC bash and the 58 to a SOC bash.

I will be purchasing a Fed Dlx for myself when I can justify it to my better half.

Cannot comment on the Christy, however that is my 2 cents worth on the Fed.

Cheers

If you want a more screen accurate color, go with the Christy's. (I still might get one of these for this reason). I don't have one of those, but from what I understand the color and shape are right on for the HJ.
I just got my Fed 4 today, and wow!
-Look for my review in the Fed 4 showcase thread.

Thanks guys. Seems like the Federation is the clear winner.

In terms of ruggedness the Fed wins hands down. You can wear that hat in rain, snow, wind, whatever and it holds up tough as nails...I would not hesitate to go with the Akubra.

I actually think I am going to save a few extra bucks and get a Mag/AB HJ. I figure, I have a Keppler to hold me over until my AB arrives sometime in the Fall, so why not go for the original Indy hat.

That is still an option. I have been considering the Henry since I read about it and the price is definately tantalizing. But, since I already have a handmade AB on order, I figured I would get an HJ and cover all basis. I guess what appeals to me is that the Magnoli HJ is just that, and HJ. It would obviously be more "original" if I went with the Swales HJ, but I am not spending $400 on that when I can get the same hat for $100 less and blocked by Steve. The Henry is an option though. I just know that I want an HJ and that itch won't go away until I have one. My AB itch has been satisfied; I ordered it a few months ago. That HJ itch will stay there until I have one. I don't know if that makes sense or not.

I'm glad I am understood. I will probably invest in the Henry eventually, but the HJ will come first, I think

I don't own either, but it is my understanding that while the Christy's is more of a dressier hat, the Federation can take more of a beating. Hope that answers your question.

Thanks for reply.

Sorry for my english

Where I said hard, I want said rigid.

My question is, if the felt of the Christy hat is more flexible than the felt of the hat Federation IV

I believe the felt on the Christy's hat is fairly floppy. I am not sure though. If you are looking for stiffer felt, you can always use stiffener on any hat.
