Lapel flopping over
Does anyone ever get this?
The left lapel on my Wested kind of folds over, exposing the underside of the zipper. This is my left, that is the side with the storm flap. It's done that ever since relatively soon after I got it.
It didn't get creased hanging in the closet or anything, I tend to make sure it's hanging straight in the closet. Now it even does it when it's hanging on a hanger.
If you're thinking it has something to do with being too tight, I'm a relatively skinny guy for someone in his mid-thirties. It is definitely not tight on me.
What do you think? Does anyone else have this issue? Any idea what it is?

The demon roll, right?AdaminNYC wrote:Does anyone ever get this?

I recall someone posted a tip where you roll the left lapel in a moisty towel to the inside of the jacket, fixing it loosely with some pincers and leave it like that for a night.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

"Demon Roll"? Sounds like I have bigger problems than I'd thought.
Do we know what causes this? Has anyone ever asked Peter? Any of the other leather experts on this board?
You know, I think I get it in some of my other jackets, though it is not as noticeable. Also, my kayak pulls to the right. I wonder if I'm somehow imbalanced...

I've only experienced on Wested jackets...ALL my Wested jackets, the worse my custom made 'Fedora' jacket. It causes the entire left hand side of my jacket to roll and open outward! No explaination has ever been offered as why it occurs. We have either just dealt with it on our own, or ignored it.

JR, is your storm flap on the right? (Incidentally, I would have bet this was a male-dominated hobby; it's good to meet you.) If so, I will get to the bottom of this demon roll thing.
One thing that makes things curl over is when one layer expands or contracts more than another layer. I don't think this is the case; the leather doesn't feel at all tight.
One theory I'm working on: the storm flap is kind of a stiff area. It's got thicker stitching and the stitching is close to each other. Maybe it curls away because it's not able to bend with your natural movement?
Together we CAN defeat the demon roll!

Since the arrival of my natural cow a few days ago, my theories on the demon roll have expanded.
I can definitely see how, on newer, stiffer leather, it is looking for areas to bend. The leather is relatively stiff but I bend around pretty freely. Thus, as the laws of nature require, the leather bends at the weakest area. As it bends, that weak area becomes more supple. Thus it continues to bend there.
Now the zipper areas, particularly on the storm flap side, are a bit tougher than the surrounding areas. It makes sense; the leather is folded over and stitched there. So as I bend, the jacket creases to get that stiffer area away from my bendy body. (Yes, my body is bendy. I do yoga.)
So, with my new cow, on days when it is too warm to wear the jacket, I’ve been zipping it up, rolling it up belly to neck, and leaving it. When I get home I roll it in the opposite direction. I’m hoping to train the leather to bend in that direction rather than to just eject the storm flap, resulting in demon roll.
As far as curing my pre-distressed of its existing demon roll, I’m not sure. I think it depends on whether I choose to sell it or keep it.
Any thoughts on my new theory? I’ll keep you posted on how the new jacket goes.

Okay, as I spend more time with my natural cow, I think I am more confident in my demon roll theory. Watching my stiff, new leather, it needs to bend somewhere as I move. I have softened it horizontally by rolling it up width-wise and sitting on it. I'm not getting any demon roll.
An addition to my theory: the Wested has a lot of leather on that inside pocket. Do the other makers have so much leather surrounding the pocket? That adds some stiffness to a new jacket.
So my questions for the group:
1, Do other manufacturers have the same inside pocket as the wested?
2, Does anyone have demon roll on the non-stormflap side?

Sorry, for the late response. I didn't get a topic notification e-mail for this. Anyway, yes the storm flap is on the right for the ladies version of the jacket.AdaminNYC wrote:JR, is your storm flap on the right? The storm flap is also reversed. And, to answer your second question, I do have a tiny demon roll (I dub thee damonette ) on the zipper side (left side) of the side.
Okay, JR - So you have the storm flap on the right with demon roll, and a little less demon roll on the non-stormflap side? Which side is the pocket on?
This is actually quite fortuitous as it lends different perspective on my theories.
Incidentally, I probably won't sell my pre-distressed wested, so I can experiment on curing the demon roll. Understanding the cause is only part of the picture.

The inside pocket is on the left side of the jacket. However, on my other Wested jacket, the pocket is on the right side. It's a brand new jacket that I haven't worn yet, so no demon rolls on it yet. I picked it up directly from Mr. Botwright himself, so that could account for the pocket on the right side. He did mention something about having a hand in the finishing of my jacket.
