New and Already Ordered a Strain

Post by myrddin »

Hi all. I've been lurking for awhile, but since I finally went ahead and ordered a whip from Joe Strain last week, I figured it was time to sign up at the ole Club Obi Wan.

I've got an 8 week wait, so I was hoping some of you can help me fill the time. I make furniture on the side and wanted to make a nice wooden display plaque for my whip.

So, I have a question to the group: What is the diameter of a loosely coiled 8 foot roo bullwhip? I want to make the plaque with a nice hal-moon shape, and need the dimensions.

I spent my childhood running around cracking whips (both a 6 and a 10 foot), so my new roo will not hang idle, let me assure you. But my study is already decorated with swords and various other weapons. I'd be a shame not to display my whip in like fashion.

Welcome Stuart, You made a good choice, Joe makes excellent whips. The 8 week wait is tough, but its worth it. Good thing that you got your order in now, and I have a feeling that in a few days those waits are going to get alot longer!

Good luck with your display case project, that’s one thing I haven’t seen around her before. Some people use makeshift hat racks and such with wooden pegs to display there whips, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a really furniture quality display piece for a whip.

Thanks for the welcome.

Dan,
Actually, I'm thinking more of a plaque with a nice large peg (largest dowel I found was 1 1/4 inch in diameter). A glorified hat rack, designed to display a whip.

Having the dimesions of a hanging whip will help me design this puppy. :)

Hey Stuart

My loosely coiled 8' strain is just under 14" diameter. Hope this helps.

BTW, you will love it

Hi Stuart, and welcome. Since you are a furniture make I can invision a really nice whip display plaque with pegs than are spaced to accept the natural coil of the whip. Walnut, Maple, Oak, whatever. Post picks when you have it made.

Hi and welcome!

All my whips coil in at around 15-16 inches, but they are not fully broken in yet... My guess would be put two pegs about 9-10 inches appart and it'll hold yer whip just fine.
