Okay, so I'm wearing my new AB Deluxe.....
....and I can't help but think that it's.......tall.
LOL
I guess I never really noticed how tall Indy's fedora is. But, even when I pay attention to it in photos and on film, I can't help but think that my hat is taller than that.
Marc and I discussed this and he assured me that the crown height I'd be getting was exactly what Indy wore in the film....he did mention that the width of the brim was a factor but I asked for my hat to be screen accurate. I didn't want it any wider.
So, as proud as I am of my hat......the bottom line is I've never had a fedora before and I guess I'm just not accustomed to having a hat that's so tall!
Anyone else have this feeling when they bought theirs?
Is the Indy fedora considered a "tall" hat?

I can change your AB Deluxe for a Dorfman Pacific of my own witch have a 1 ½” shorter crown if you will; I pay both shipping and handling expenses!
Now, seriously; a real fedora have at least 5” for the crown, an Indy version should be a little bit more (depending on the bashing), but indeed you have to get use to it, it’s not a baseball cap, it’s a real man (or gentleman) hat!
I couldn’t afford an AB Deluxe this season, but my Christie’s is just as tall as it should be and I love it! Use yours non-stop (Go out with it, have lunch with it, watch TV with it, brush your teeth with it, etc.) from now and I beat Thursday night you will be really comfortable with the look and feeling of it...

It's a matter of time
When I got my Fed Deluxe, after not wearing a fedora for several years, it
felt strange. So what I did was take a bus trip to a local seaside resort where I had no place to put the hat but on my head. After a few hours I got accustomed to the feel of it on my head and the looks. I grew comfortable ducking to enter shops, taking it off to go into the local library, and general hat wearer's affectations such as tipping it low over my eyes to shield a my eyes as I faced the sun, and tipping it back if I had to look closely at something or through the viewfinder of my camera.
After over a year of wearing it almost everywhere, I feel strange without it. As if I left something home I needed.
It will become YOUR hat in time.

The first time I wore my AB over to my mother-in-laws house she freaked out that my hat was far too tall and came over to me and started smashing it down on my head to make it shorter! Argh! I knew I should laugh it off but geez...
Tony, can you post pictures? I doubt the hat is too tall, if this is your first decent Indy fedora then I'm not surprised you're reacting this way. I think most of us do...

I just think we all look Amish!!!
Just kidding, but seriously I love my fedoras and couldn't give an owl's hoot what anyone else thinks. I wear a hat everywhere and I love it. To me if you like it that's all that matters. But I've always been an individual that treasures having your own mind, so I started with the owl hoot philosophy as a child. It may take others longer to get that mind set.

I got the CS bash and was asked by Marc to not post pictures until the film's release. So, I'll post them soon!Neolithic wrote:Tony, can you post pictures? I doubt the hat is too tall, if this is your first decent Indy fedora then I'm not surprised you're reacting this way. I think most of us do...
I haven't even worn it out yet. I got it yesterday afternoon and haven't had an opportunity to wear it 'out' yet.You may get used to it. I like a higher crown than when I first started wearing fedoras. Has anyone commented on your hat while wearing it?

My mom did the exact same thing the first time she saw my AB. Every time I've worn it she's said something about it being too tall, then the other day I went over to my parent's house and she said, "We watched Indiana Jones on TV last night, and your hats not that bad after all."Neolithic wrote:The first time I wore my AB over to my mother-in-laws house she freaked out that my hat was far too tall and came over to me and started smashing it down on my head to make it shorter! Have to agree! I did the same thing after getting my HJ. I think what it was is that I was used to seeing my profile with the DP. But I adjusted after a few days and now I looooooooooooooooooove it. Edit: Oh and sorta off topic, Tron what style is your fedora?

Just an update: I've had my AB Deluxe for a little over a week and whatever apprehension I had about the height was gone after 72 hours.
I LOVE the hat and it looks perfect. And what's interesting is that it apparently doesn't "look" tall to other people (just like we never think Indy's hat is "tall"). Interesting illusion when it's on your own head for the first time.
Tonight was the first night I didn't wear my hat out. Felt naked without it.
