Please your help on my new whip

Post by Indiana Strones »

Ok, I finally bought my very first whip, just in time for the movie. I bought this on ebay: the seller stated that the kangaroo leather comes from David Morgan, and that the whip was made by Adam Richie 'an US whip champion' (?). It's a 6 ft. and I paid 137 euros (about 214 dollars). As I understand NOTHING about bullwhips, please let me know your opinions...
Thanks for the help! :whip:

I think I made that bullwhip about 6 months ago (I could be wrong). Do you have a link to the closed auction you could PM me?

Probably Adam Winrich.

The knot looks like one of his too. Everything but the last name fits, and Richie, Winrich....You never know. Maybe Adam is Lionel Richie's long lost son, (hey...There you go...Play a duet on piano and harmonica to "Dancin' on the Ceiling," while providing rhythm section on stockwhip. There's GOTTA be another world record in that, and no one would want to break it, because it would mean performing a stupid song with Lionel Richie!)

I don't recall Adam ever saying he was buying hides from David Morgan, but hey! It's certainly possible!

Adam? Care to halt your Ren-Rat-Entertainment Activities and say if this is your whip or not?

That doesn't look like Adam Winrich's work to me. There's too much variance in strand width and a strange taper to the handle. His work is much more precise than that.

Yeah.
Here's what whisky is talking about.

The checks should all be just about exactly the same size, and follow in a straight seam. As you can see above, the strands rotate away from their starting point. Something you would not find on a winrich.

Holy @#$%!

How did I miss THAT!

I saw this at work, and just read the description and took a glance...a couple years ago, Adam was doing big "Raiders" style knots like that. I didn't look much further.

Yeah, there is NO WAY that Adam would let THAT leave his shop.

Good catch, Nick!

Sorry for misleading, I. S.

Thats not to say that the whip is junk though...

Even with the twist in the plaiting, as long as its plaited tightly it should still crack fine. The twisting, while it does effect the way the whip falls, (straighter seam = easier crack, better flow, easier energy build up) you still have a decent piece to crack with, its by no means a "el chipo"

The twist is in the handle only, not in the whip.

Hard to tell without actually getting to try it out, but it definitely looks like you have a whip on the better end of the quality spectrum. If the twist is only in the handle, it won't affect the performance of the whip at all. In fact, some twist in the thong usually doesn't affect performance much either, so long as the twist isn't an outright spiral. The taper of the thong looks nice - should work fine.

For someone who 'knows nothing about whips' you seem to have done a really good job picking a decent looking one out at a bargain price!

Try it out - tell us what you think about it!

Nope, I didn't make that whip. Thanks to all of you who pointed out the details that determined that it wasn't one of mine--I'm kind of flattered and blushing a little bit
