USW "scarred" leather sidenote..

Post by ztmario »

well, since the thread this belongs in was locked (there was nothing else to say on the subject?) but I think it's worth adding, the novapelle LC jacket I just got today from wested has some of the same marks on it. I'm not sure I would say that they looked like they were drawn on with a marker, but they're definitely the same thing. they probably stand out less on the wested because the leather is darker to begin with. either way, they're the epitome of a non-issue, but still worth mentioning.

It was locked by the request of the originator, as well as the fact it left the topic and went straight into a gear care issue, so it had indeed run it's course.

If you're starting another topic, so be it, but don't pick up where something else was locked. There are reasons things happen around here.

If this becomes a manufacture vs manufacture issue, which it can easily become one, this, too, will be locked. :?

One question that I think deserves more exploration was whether or not to use Pecard's on this jacket. Everyone raves about using it on every other jacket, why not this one?

Folks,
The reason I requested the previous post to be locked is that is was going places and getting responses that I never intended for it to get. People were misinterpreting the post and pulling out VERY negative and ridiculous things about one very awesome jacket made by one very awesome company. There were false assumptions and statements made that were on the brink of slanderous...

Also, the whole Pecard's issue came up, and I got the same feeling I do when I see a classic muscle car in an action movie get destroyed...I felt quite sick knowing that the post I started could eventually lead to someone thinking about smearing Pecard's all over some of the finest leather I've ever laid my hands on. So out of respect for the makers of the jacket and each dignified owner of these pieces of history, I requested for its closure. Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Z

Understood, but I'd still like to hear more about why Pecard's is suddenly bad for leather jackets. :?:

It's NOT bad for leather jackets. If I recall, the argument here was that this particular jacket was fine without the Pecards, whether for reasons of the treatment and finish of the leather, or for aesthetic reasons, or both.

...and that it would change the appearance due to the distressed nature of the leather.

well if you are looking for more, I just cut mine Saturday and it needs to be cut again

oh and on topic Pecards would do nothing for scarred leather. However I do have to admit that on a piece of adventure gear with scars is just fine, in fact I think it adds a bit to the look, as long as it is not to the point of weakening the leather.

NO thanks!!! =;

You could try some brown Pecards. It helps cover the scars very nicely. I still would not do it to this particular jacket, though.

Honestly, I'm not trying to be a pain in the butt, and I do not mean to cast doubt upon anyone's information. Just trying to understand.

Pecard's would be a bad idea because the leather is weathered? Again, all over the forum people talk about using it on their pre-distressed and/or self-weathered jackets, and this "ruin the leather" issue has not come up before, to my knowledge.

So I still seek further enlightenment. :)

Treadwell, I think the issue here is not whether or not Pecards would be healthy for your jacket, rather, since this is a special and specific run of leather used in these AND the film jackets, using Pecards would affect the look of the leather. When you use Pecards on a beat up jacket, it "fills in" some of the lighter spots, darkening the leather and making the jacket look a bit newer and nicer. The folks who got this specific jacket want to keep its appearance as is, and using Pecards would darken up the predistressed hide, making it look like a "new" jacket as opposed to an "old" jacket. It's more for provenance and posterity than anything. Does that help?

No. Wested gets their leather from an Italian tannery (correct me if I'm wrong on that KT/Peter), and the CS leather comes from a tannery in California.
