Wested or FS goat?
My next jacket purchase is going to be goat, but which to go with FS or Wested. I love my Wested lambskin and that's all I have to compare. Wested is the original movie jackets, but I've read alot of people who prefer the FS. Why is that? Is it just because of minor nitpicking for screen accuracy (which no one can ever achieve in my opinion unless they somehow get an exact copy of each hero and stunt jacket used) or because the jacket will hold up longer? Which is better constructed or are they pretty much equal? Just wondering, if you guys don't know no one will.

Oh, we know, but with the exception of a fedora shoot out, I can't think of anything that brings folks out of the two different camps in droves than a question like this one does. I play no favorites, so I'll stand clear. Ok folks, no kicking, eye gouging, or low punches. And break clean when told. Regards. Michaelson

Take some time this weekend and do a search for similar threads. You'll find alot of feedback on this topic. I personally went with the Flightsuits for its rugged construction and detail to the Raider style. Not too long ago your post would have been replied to 58 times by now. Things have mellowed since then. Basically you can't lose. If you have the extra money get the Expedition off the rack. When it arrives try it on and give it a good once over. If you are not pleased with it for any reason, you have several months to send it back for a full refund. Not an exchange, a refund. You can't beat that! This'll give you an opportunity to compare the two.

Hey Chamorro, can you go into some detail about why you think the FS is superior? I'm not to concerned if the pockets on a Wested are a fraction of a centimeter off. Chances are if you measured all the jackets used for Raiders each one is going to have subtle differences. So is the FS better stitched in your opinion or why do you think it's better?

The overall construction, fit and quality is better. FS makes primarily military jackets and makes them to military specs. The stitching is better, the jacket is stronger, the leather is of a better quality. It drapes better and those accursed action pleats stay closed. Plus, I think that they are more comfortable and less restrictive and they wear better.
What it comes down to is this: do you want a decent fashion jacket or one that will last a lifetime as well as look good? It's your money and your choice.

Life is short! Get both!
I have the Wested in Authentic Lamb and the FS in Seal Goat. They are both wonderful jackets based on different reasons. The Wested is hand made by people who know their craft and Wested is the original manufacturer of the film jackets! Also, where else are you going to get a hand made, custom jacket shipped for $250?
The FS is modeled from an ACTUAL film jacket and is as accurate as you're going to find. Also, the FS Goat is TOUGH AS NAILS and will last you the rest of your life! The quality and craftmanship of the FS is unbelievable and as Runquist said..."they fit better". There is no slippage off the shoulders and you can just feel the quality.
Just my .02. I love them both equally.
Regards,
Dr. J

I take exceptiom tp that remark as the ACTUAL film jacket was mafr by ME Peter Botwright of Wested Leather (Leather Concessionaires) so the FS is a copy of my jacket albeit a very well made and comtructed copy.
Cheers

Ive just received my wested (authentic lambskin), Peters craftmanship and that of his staff I believe is second to non (this is my second jacket). I cant conceive that a jacket (FS) a more or less off the peg jobby is made better and fit better than a tailor made jacket to your specs made by the original manufactuers.
Just my 2 penny worth.

I honestly don't know much about all of this. But I do know that when I get my "official" leather indy jacket, it'll be a Wested for two reasons.
1. I hear alot of nice things about this guy.
2. Like he said, he's the mafrer of the original jacket
ps. that last part was a joke, but the fact that he's the maker of the original jacket is my second reason.

I have had the pleasure of owning and wearing both and I think our fellow gearheads and have done well in summing up the basic differences. I see you've made your choice. Let us know what you think when you receive it.Dr._J wrote:....They are both wonderful jackets based on different reasons. Well I'm one sided on this...never having seen or owned a FS, but my Wested arrived a few days ago and I love it! I have owned many jackets in my time most all of them leather, for work and play and the Wested is right on up there with the best of them in every way. Plus your getting the jacket from the designer and maker of Indy's own jacket!!! Also the price is great almost a steal for what you get! Just my thoughts. Brett

Brett,
I'm really jazzed that you like your Wested. I love mine! For a good discussion on a couple of "recent" Wested offerings, see the thread http://www.indygear.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3445
I have to say that I got my Flightsuits Expo first. It's hard to explain the differences through a 2-dimensional medium like this. You know when you saw your first DVD? After only seeing videos (and not knowing what "better" actually looked like) you could actually see and appreciate the difference in the DVD. That's a kind of what's it's like. I would never give up my Wested. Talk about a great jacket for an awesome price! You should check out the pre-distressed cowhide.
Anyway, I sold my Expo! One of the things I didn't like about the seal chrome goat Expedition? The interfacing in the cargo pocket flaps. I HATED that with a passion! I would love to get an Expo without the interfacing in the cargo pocket flaps. It just didn't drape the way I thought it should b/c of those flaps. However, I recall reading a thread around here (somewhere) last Spring or so that mentioned FS (despite taking custom orders) not making a jacket unless it had the interfacing in the cargo pockets.
The other thing is that the jacket would remain in a pristine condition due to the amazing quality of the leather. I was concerned it would never look like an Indy jacket that had been on an adventure. My pre-distressed Wested cowhide looked like an Indy jacket. Right out of the box.
I guess there are pros and cons to each.

Hey thanks Indiana Joe for the posting the thread. Always something interesting being discussed around here thats for sure. I have the Wested Lambstouch-Cowhide, its very soft and drapes perfectly. As much as I wear my jackets here in the winter I'm sure my Wested will be nice and worn looking in a couple years. Right now I am enjoying my new jacket and hoping for cooler weather soon! Brett

Thanks to all the tips, every little bit of extra knowledge is always helpful. I finally did end up with my goat skin and guess what ..........it's a wested.
Cabinetman's jacket didn't fit like he wanted, seeing how he's a bit taller that I am. So I bought his 40 reg goat to go with my auth. lamb. I gotta say I'm really impressed and Michaelson after I put a layer of Pecards lotion on the goat it has softened out much more than I ever though it would. I gotta say I've been so impressed with the original wested that I have no intention of going FS. I know others think differently but I'm a small town retailer myself, and if the business does right by me I have to stand by it. Thanks again to everyone, and over all thanks to Cabinetman and Peter at Wested.

You're most welcome, Lindy. My newest order has been in England for about a week now. So glad you like the goat. I did, too, but I went with lamb this time. By the way, that's a 42 reg, you have there. I did, in fact, go with a long this time and had a couple other minor changes, too.
Again, so pleased you like it. Glad we could help each other.

Dear Fellow Illinoian,
I went with the authentic lambskin. You know, I think that thing's going to arrive when I'll be vacationing (having it shipped to my folks). It'll be nice to come home to. Of course it would be nicer yet if it arrived before we leave, but I don't anticipate that. I don't suppose I'll be needing it in central Florida, anyway, much less the Caribbean.
Pics and review in late September, then...
