What do you pay?

Post by IndianaCollins »

What do you guys pay for a decent original M1917 raiders type? Just curious, because I found one for sale in my neck of the woods(somewhat) for $300 flat! I am going to purchase it if it's not already sold(I left a message and am hoping the guy will call me back soon) and is in good condition. I am excited, but know not to get my hopes up too much. back to the question, what do you normally pay?

That's a good price. They can be modified if it has the longer barrel. I would have it checked out by a gunsmith. And, maybe take it to 2 or 3 to see if they all agree. I am going through that process and getting an chance to talk a lot about guns to many great folks. I am soaking up the knowledge like a sponge.

I have seen some 1917's for around $300 that were in decent shape and appeared to have nothing wrong with them except some holster wear. Having said that, it's always best to have a gunsmith or other knowledgeable person check it out. Everyone should have a local gunshop where they hang out. The characters that pass through them are interesting and sometimes you learn something useful. I say that because some of the gunshop gurus are full of hogwash, just as you'll find in any profession or activity.

Pyroxene, what are the current gun laws in Texas...do we have a waiting period, even for collectible guns?

From what I understand and observed for the state of Texas, there is no waiting period. There is a federally required background check that takes about 10 mins. You basically fill out the one page form and they call it in. (National Instant Criminal Background Check (NICS)) http://www.fbi.gov/hq/cjisd/nics/index.htm

There was a national 5 day waiting period but I think that expired in 1998. I got called the day my gun arrived to "come pick it up".

Texas Department of Public Safety keeps a very up-to-date website.

http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/administra ... sindex.htm

If you carry a cocealed handgun license (CHL) I think the background check is skipped. Due to the fact that DPS will conduct extensive background checks of juvenile records for the previous 10 years and all adult records. I plan on taking the CHL course sometime next month. I'll know more then.

well, I just talked to the guy, and the gun is in good condition, but he said the rifling in the barrel was quite worn out. so, i decided no go, unless i can find a replacment m1917 barrel fast. which is doubtful.

Is the gun a .45 ACP? It looks like this guy has parts for one. http://www.e-gunparts.com/product.asp?c ... =373770-01

Indy, Gun Parts (the site Pyroxene told you about) does have barrels for the 1917...both originals and replacements (which are about $51, as opposed to $92 for the originals). Don't let the worn rifling keep you from getting this revolver! You might, however, negotiate a little for a better deal, in light of the fact that the rifling is worn. Then you'll be on your way to having a "Raiders" revolver.

well, either way i go, i'm still going to have to wait a little while. i'm preping to get a car(or truck) in the next week or two, and i was going to scrape a little out of my savings for the pistol, but i may still consider it, if its not sold.
