Hey All,
Living in Alberta Canada, there is one thing we have a lot of....and that is cows. My friends family are cowboys and they're able to get me some cow hides on the cheap, but I am wondering if there are any specific things I should ask for them to do to it that would make it good for whip making?
Thanks!

Hi,
1,5-2 mm thickness, not stretchy and strong of course . You don't need belly side from it for good plaiting. Check is the surface brokeing. And i hope this hide are tanned?

I guess its all preference.
I use 4-5 oz cowhide. But thats just me.
If you are looking to make a 12 plait whip, thinner leather is
easier to work with.
make sure its good leather. A hide can be fine for other leather goods, but it can stink for plaiting. It has to be a nice constant thickness, with no stretch, that can be cut into small pieces.
