Well...you know yer gonna get the standard "Wear goggles" and Wear Leather jacket" and other safety equiptment advice. And YOU REALLY should! Take a peek at this:

And you don't even wanna think about that being yer eye!

From what the more learned whip-weilders have stated before...a video or a book can be a tremendous help.

In case yer not aware of them...

Please see Sergei's whip URLs for videos and books:

And the tutorial:

Hope you don't beat yerself silly!!! (assuming yer not already silly! )

My advice would be: take your time. Don't go for the hardest, loudest possible crack the first time around. Practice your form at half-speed until you get the hang of it, until you develop a feel for where the tip of the whip is at all times. As Anthony DeLongis says, you have to be extremely conversant with your whip (I just love that line).

I would have to agree with TOJ on this one. This is one of those sports in which your form is crucial. It is definately not a wise idea to go for the loudest crack when you're learning. If you want to study the different cracks, I would reccommend getting the "Whip Cracking Made Easy" video by Alex Green and Mark Allen. The video shows the four basic cracks, which are really all you need to get started. Or you could just read the tutorials at the Indy Gear main site. And I couldn't agree more with Rabbittooth on this, use safety precautions! This will hopefully minimize the ammount of injuries you receive while learning. Hope this helps. Good luck to ya with with your learning.

The tape is really good. I would learn one crack at a time and just pratice that one. I will watch it right before I leave for the park so it is fresh in my memory.

Yes, go slow at first. Don't try and be Indiana Jones right away. Give it a few months of solid practice. Also, when you are starting out, do wear goggles, a leather jacket and some type of a wide brimmed hat (hmmm... I wonder what type of jacket and hat you should wear? ) I never wore any protective clothing when I was learning, and trust me, I felt it! So don't do that.

A great video that just shows you some basic moves as well as really incredible shows is "The Art of the Bullwhip" video which is narrated by Mark Allen. Really a great video. You can buy it through David Morgan's website at:

Have fun and be careful!
