del Carpio 10 foot KOTCS
Hey guys,
Here's another 10 foot KOTCS )
In this one I think I got really close to Terry's whip. This time I tied the knots in the same color as the thong. I am very happy with how the knots turned out.
It has two kangaroo hide braided bellies over a rolled core, 2 bolsters and a 12 plait overlay cut with fine strands. It has an 8-strand point, just like Terry's whips. Even the fall and fall hitch are the same.
The diameter in the handle and thong are exactly the same as on my Jacka.
Anyway, the pics. Hope you guys like it. Btw, it's up for sale! Email me for details: info@delcarpiowhips.com
Regards,
Bernardo

hat
very nice indeed. I like seeing your work.
Bernardo,
The strand width, the plaiting, the knots, the fall hitch...NAILED! It's Jacka to these eyes!
First you nail the look and design of the Morgan whips from the film better than the guy who actually MADE them does anymore, and now this...
Incredible Detail!
Good job!
-Dan
Also: Did you use a lightweight material for the foundation? Terry uses either fiberglass, graphite on his standard models, (I don't know what he's using for the KotCS design,) And what's your turks-head foundation? Lead tape? Terry just uses a smaller knot underneath doesn't he?
I haven't read a solid review of Terry's KotCS whip from anyone who has previously used Jacka whips, and I'm curious if the design difference is just the length of the handle. I know you modified a standard Aussie Jacka, but you were thinking about ordering the "Official-Unofficial" one from Aussie Saddle. Did you?
I'm just curious if he's using steel for weight on these, and if he isn't, are you following your normal Indy internal construction method and using steel. My reason is that I've been wondering how Terry's whips would handle with more weight in the end, and don't know if I want to wait and see if/when he starts taking custom orders ;-)
Thanks!

Thank you all for the kind comments. The appreciation for my work and the desire to do things better is what keeps me going in this craft.
The response to this whip has been extremely enthusiastic, and many members are already interested in it. I guess a few good photos help )
Dan,
Thanks a lot! Since you are fond of T. Jacka's whips, those words are no small compliment. This whip is my third KOTCS whip, and I'm really pleased of how close it looks to the new Jacka whip. In a sense, my objetive is met, since I wanted to capture the look, a some of the feel of it, while using a somewhat different construction.
I believe Terry uses the same handle foundation for his KOTCS whips as his normal "heavy" whips. It consists of a figerglass rod. His other whips are much lighter and have a flexible foundation made of some resilient material. I, on the other hand used the same heavy spike as for my standard Indy bullwhips. It adds a bit more weight to the handle, and improves the balance, IMO. I also added some lead tape at the butt, again to improve the balance, but I put a lot more than Terry does. Terry adds only a tiny amount of lead, that I wonder if it changes the balance at all. As a reference point, DM typically loads his whips with approx. 100 grams of lead, versus 27 grams that I found on my Jacka.
Dan Borton has been gathering a lot of information directly from Terry himself about his new whip used on Indy 4, so I would expect Dan to post about this some time within the next few weeks.
Regarding ordering an "Official-Unofficial" Jacka from Aussie saddle, I would have done so if their whips were not so over priced. Obvioulsy they've already jumped into the "famous whipmaker" badwagon. I'm sure they make more money than Terry, which is unfair to both final customer and whipmaker. It would be great if Terry can offer his whips directly, so that customers pay less, and he makes more coins.
My converted Jacka handles way better than when it was long handled, at least for me. The shorter handle feels better balanced because it brings the balance point closer to your hand, and with the lead tape I added at the butt, it feels even better. Even so, it feels heavy.
Now that I'm in the US, you may want to send me your Jacka for a conversion, since shipping it back and forth would be cheap. Fancy the idea? )
Regards,
Bernardo

Dan, as mentioned, I’ve been collecting a great deal of information on these whips from Terry directly, as well as from other sources involved with the film and others who have used the movie whips. I've got some great stuff, including some pretty neat recent information that I am very excited about. The details will be posted when the new Indy gear site goes online in a few weeks as well as on the fourm, as it will be exclusive to us.thefish wrote:I haven't read a solid review of Terry's KotCS whip from anyone who has previously used Jacka whips, and I'm curious if the design difference is just the length of the handle.

The Indy 4 bullwhips however are not just a shorter handled version of his standard Australian bullwhips that Terry makes. They are made heavier with the transition bound somewhat differently then his normal whips which compensate for the shortened handle. The balance is a bit different then the standard whip as well; it’s actually rather heavy in comparison. The handles are fiberglass, These are serious whips and Terry is putting a lot of effort into making each one perform as well as he is able, he is very adamant in that they should perform exactly the way he thinks that they should.
We are finishing details on postage and import permits, etc. once all that is taken care of and we make sure the ordering process is working smoothly, I’ll be announcing prices and ordering details here at COW. He will be able to supply 8 and 10 ft whips, both lengths that where supplied to the movie. They will include a certificate of authenticity from him. Keep watching.

Jacka whips of this style are thicker than modern Morgan whips. My Jacka measures 28mm in diameter at the widest part, after the ring knot. I'd say that's a good average, so that's what I follow for my KOTCS whips.
Terry's whips are thicker in that area part because of the heavy binding at the transition zone. Terry uses a bailing twine like material that adds bulk and increases the final diameter.

Bernardo
