My Wested Order...
Ok, I had posted before the forums were reverted back to april, and I forgot something, and was wondering if you guys could help (please!).
I know I heard for some "must-have" special features, and I know there was:
Gussets
And
Inside Pockets
I remember something special about the inside pockets though, and I forgot what it was. I think it was non-outlined? Please tell me if that is it...
Thanks again fellas...

Well, gussets are the extra piece of leather in the arm pit to help assist with freedom of movement. A definite must have in my opinion.
As far as the inside pockets, it depends on what you're asking. Some people choose for two, for practicality, some request them to be zippered or snapped and then some ask for just the inside pocket, not the surrounding leather supporting it. To be true to a Raiders jacket, you shoulc ask for one pocket, without the surrounding leather.
I believe the surrounding leather was added on for LC to help support the weight of the grail diary, but it was not there in Raiders, as can be seen in the "stars" photo. Adding a zipper or snap, or second pocket on the right side are personal choices. I have never requested any of these for fear of it affecting the drape of the jacket. I would think a zipper would make a pocket more stiff than just a freely opened one, but I have never owned one like this, so I'm not the best to say.
Hope this helps.

I was one of the folks you might have seen posting about getting your pockets non outlined, I have noticed it ruins the drape on my lamb, and on my pre dist. cow....Chris King was the fist to point this out I think....Instead of a big outlining leather piece, they just have one thin piece of leather on the opening of the pocket!
Hope this helps

I think Peter has stated that the original intent was to have the diary in the inside pocket, but when it came time for shooting, they switched to the hand warmer pocket. Thus the inside pocket was designed for the use, but never utilized.rick5150 wrote:I am curious. Was the Grail Diary ever put into the inside pocket?

While we're talking about drape...
i had mine made without an inside pocket period. I never use them anyway. The jacket seems to wear better as well. The lining on both sides stays stuck the shell and that makes it drape better. It does. If you use an inside pocket, then you should get one or two. I don't.

Thanks for all of your replies everyone...
It stinks that the last backup of the forums were in april ...It doesn't matter though, the community is so strong, you guys were able to answer my question in less than a day.
Ok, so if I do go with inside pockets, non-outlined, and nylon zippers...
Gussets - Definitely
and I was thinking of the name tag thing, but that isn't a big deal...
Thanks again everyone...

One more thing buletman.
It may not be screen accurate, but you may consider telling them to put the zipper on the American side (if you're from the states). It's more what you're used to using and being able to have the bell pull exposed instead of hidden under the storm flap gives the jacket more character IMHO
Have fun,
junior
PS-don't ask me about DeLoreans

I think I understand your question Rixter, though it reads kind of wierd...
Putting the zipper pull on the wearers right hand side (American) as opposed to the way the film jacket was made(European), on the left, is just for personal preferance. The only reason the Raiders jacket had the zipper pull on the left is because the maker of the jacket for the film was in Europe and that is the way zippers are made over there. If, say, Flightsuits would have made the Raiders jacket for the film, the zipper would have been on the "American" side. Some choose to request this on both Westeds and Flightsuits jackets for the sake of ease of use of what they are used to and no more. On certain features, sometimes people opt for functionality rather than screen accuracy.

junior,
Sorry, sometimes I get lost in thought, and therefore may not always make it clear as to what I mean.
I was thinking more in terms of WHY certain countries drive on the left side while others drive on the right side, and if this custom of left versus right carries over into other aspects of life in other countries, such as zipper placement which you explained very well.
Fortunately I found some explanations on the web for the possible origins of the driving customs if anyone’s interested:
