Dear fedora fans,
I occasionally write freelance articles for Men's Vogue magazine. My latest and dearest project is a featurette on everyone's favorite hatter, Steve Delk. The article focuses on Steve's quest for the perfect Indy fedora and his role in the production of Indy IV.
The article can be found in the "Threads" section of the May issue of the magazine. Copies of the issue should be in newstands any day now--look for a red sportscar on the cover.
To Steve: thank you for your time and conversation. You are a true asset, not just to this board, but to the world of Men's style as well.
Best regards,
Michael

Update
I just checked--the May issue of the magazine is already on display in newstands in Grand Central Station in New York City.
Should be coming to your local magazine store soon now, if it's not there already. Again, be sure you get the May issue with the red sportscar on the cover...

Without Men's Vogue I wouldn't have found http://www.magneticcollarstays.com, the best invention ever. I'm there.

Online version?
Sorry, no online version as of yet. But the magazine usually puts the articles online once the print copies have thoroughly saturated the newstands. It's better for business this way . . .Michaelson wrote:
By the way, is there an online version of the article we can get to?

I just checked a local grocery store in Phoenix, and the April issue is on the racks with a pull date of 4/21/08, so the May issue should be out at that time. I've never heard of Men's Vogue before, so this will be a first. I'll buy it for the red sports car and the article. I can see Indy in a red two seater in the 50's... just he and Marion -- no side kicks needed.

I'll try to find out from my editor if and when an online version of the article will be available.
Not sure about the details of regional distribution, but Barnes and Noble and Borders carry the magazine in their "Men's magazines" sections, although they might not stock the May issue until next week in some locations.

I picked up Men's Vogue this weekend and it's an excellent article. I haven't finished the rest of the magazine yet but -- so far -- I've enjoyed the other articles and features. It reminds me a bit of what GQ magazine used to be like when they actually wrote articles about mens' suits, accesories, custom shirts, etc.
I would've liked to have seen Marc Kitter get equal time and mention. But I understand that might have been an editorial decision on the part of the magazine; the article is only two half-page columns by the time they added the graphics.
Good article, though.

Seems like I'm left out again, huh? It does kinda sadden me to be honest... I've made sure that Steve was mentioned in the interviews I've done so far. Incl. the crappy one in the Danish newspaper of today: http://www.jv.dk/artikel/390277

Not my fault Marc. I was sent a detailed questionaire by someone, the Editor perhaps, and you were mentioned as being half of the equation. This was after the original interview. Folks generally print what they want to print, and the brevity of the article is possibly much of the reason. I think they are thinking of their readership when they write anything.I've made sure that Steve was mentioned in the interviews I've done so far. Once the Indy 4 page is active on my site, the story will be there, so anyone interested in the AB will know about you. I think part of the problem is they are more interested in the founder of AB, at least some over here are. So, that gets the press, unless it is a rag devoted to Indy fans. Fedora

It is regrettable, but I think a matter of where the publication is located and who was the one doing the interview. Focusing on one individual is simpler for the writer and the reader.
The reality is when the dust settles from the movie the average movie goer/magazine reader won't care or remember who did the hat or jacket, etc. But the people who really care about it will remember. Continued congratulations to you both!

I'm sure 'obi-cpo' -- when he returns to this thread -- can clarify what article was actually submitted to the magazine; he's the author.
Unfortunately -- based on the title he gave this thread -- it seems that he's saying that he wrote the article about Steve only. I hope that's not the case as the Adventurebilt connection to the new movie (and the subsequent demand of these hats) is very much a corroboration between Steve AND Marc.
No disrespect intended to Steve at all. He deserves all the credit he gets. I just hate to see Marc not getting equal due.

Marc - just wanted to add that, in my artistic career I have had numerous articles done up on me and my work and NONE of them have been entirely accurate. All of them leave out material that I specifically ask to have included.
Thing is - the mentality here (USA) of the writer is that they want to become a star writer USING the subject matter as their vehicle. Accuracy is not their primary goal.
It is lame though, I know.
One article turned my internship at ILM into "designing ships for the Star Wars films" - pretty laughable since I was in elementary school at the time.
Embarrassing stuff sometimes too.

From the writer: Marc is cited in the article.
Dear forum members,
Please be aware that I did make absolutely certain Marc was mentioned in the article and, in fact, his name is in there: He is credited as Steve's "partner" during film production. This reference appears towards the end of the article where the number of hats produced for the movie is discussed.
In all honesty, I would have liked to have detailed Marc's contributions more than the one reference that made it into the final copy, but I was given only a little more than 350 words to work with. Also, the editors wanted me to focus on Steve's original "quest," as the founder of the Adventurebilt, and his specific background and personality for an American audience.
I really tried to be as detailed as I could and stay true to the subject, but, ultimately, articles that appear in the "Threads" section of the magazine are never more than slightly impressionistic sketches, accompanied by photos.
To Marc: Please accept my regrets if you feel you have been overlooked by my Men's Vogue piece. Although it was decided to make Steve the "star" of the featurette, I insisted that you be cited, too, so as not to overlook your fine and valuable contributions.
Sincerely,
Michael

Michael, thank you very much for taking the time to come back and make this statement. It means very, very much to me (heck, this "Indystuff" is my LIFE).
I'm VERY well aware of how the press has a TREMENDOUES talent to misquote, leave out details that would be important to the person interviewed, take things out of context or even to make claims that are plain wrong. The Danish article mentioned above is an EXCELLENT example of this (and yes, I realize that most of you can't read it - thanks God ).
To all, I want to assure you that there's not the SLIGHTEST doubt about Steve giving me my part of the credit. Steve knows that very well but I wanted to tell this to all of you, just in case you got the wrong impression. It just saddens me, that's all
Regards and thanks for your feedback and support,
Marc

I will look for this article - did not know there was a Men's Vogue magazine. Actually, I knew there was a British version but that is about it. A few years back I actually was in American Vogue with Gwyneth Paltrow. I was teaching a summer course at Oxford University and they came by to do a photo shoot in the beautiful garden in the college I was at. It ended up being a photo of myself and Ms. Paltrow walking on a path. Quite nice actually and taken by Mario Testino. Of course you can see her face and not mine....sort of like what is being discussed here with stuff being left out by editors etc.

And, yeah, Men's Vogue hasn't been around too long. On the whole, the writing in it and coverage is pretty good, maybe a notch more refined than your average men's style magazine like "Maxim" or "GQ".
Although I have to admit, even though I write for the publication, the "Vogue" part of title can be a bit off-putting to some guys . . .

Michael: Thanks for the heads up on this article. I spent $6 (I live in Canada so magazines are more here) on it tonight just to get your article so I hope you were well paid.Minnesota Jones wrote:Just picked mine up today. Nice article!
Oh, it's on page 63.
Thanks also to Minnesota Jones for the page number. I hate it when you see an article publicized on the front of a magazine and then can never find it inside. Having the page number allowed me to go right to the article.
