What's a good source for falls?

Post by Weston »

I am in need of a good source for falls. Heavy latigo, redhide, or whitehide will do. I have a bag full of rawhide falls I made, but they are pretty brittle and I spend half my whipcracking sessions looking for my cracker and reattatching it. Western Stage Props is a little spendy. I can cut my own out of hide if I could find a good source. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

David Morgan sells fantastic redhide falls. I've always used them on my whips (even ones not made by David), and they are very durable, provided that you tie a secure cracker knot.

The latigo ones Joe Strain sells are good too. But you're going to run into the same problem that you do with ones from Mark. They're a little pricey.

I like big chunky thick falls that, where they leave the fall attachment hitches, are very thick - so that in cross section they are basically a square with rounded edges. This would mean leather about 6mm thick in metric.

Every time I buy a fall from someone the fall leather is too narrow IMO. More like 3 or 4mm.

Looks like the only way to ensure getting exactly the right type of fall for you is to buy the leather and cut your own. I like Bernardo's falls. The one on my whip is perfect. It is also standing up very well to use, and is not cracking or breaking.

I purchase from Robert Duke. Fantastic prices and his falls last me a long long time if taken care of properly and fairly good service.
Strain's latigo fall has lasted me more then a year already and I'm no where near needing to replace it yet. I had a white hide fall from his as well and it's at least a year old as well. Excellent service.
Either way, you'll make out well.

Hi Weston,

Here is a good place to get solid whitehide fall leather:

https://www.siegelofca.com/itemdetail.asp?prodid=313

The 8/10 oz size would be good for the thicker square falls. And one hide will last the average whipcracker years.

When I wrote "not cracking" I meant the grain of the leather of the fall was not fracturing. The fall itself cracks very well indeed.

Thanks Paul for that link to the leather.

No worries!

The past couple of batches I've gotten from siegel have been some of the best, and strongest whitehide I've seen. Alex Green has told me that the falls I made him from this leather are "THE best falls!"

Let us know how it goes.

Is there a place I could a smaller peace of that? Or if any body has a half of one I could buy. I would buy the whole thing but I don't have the need, and that's a lot of money to have tide up in a side of leather. If you know what I mean.

Hi ST,

Send me an email at whipmaker@midwestwhips.com

I just got in a couple of new white hides that I haven't cut into yet, so I should have plenty to spare if you want to buy a smaller piece.
