Used Hat Pricing

Post by theinterchange »

This is a subject I haven't seen covered here. If it has, forgive my oversight.

What should one expect to pay for used hats?

Speaking of Keppler's, AB's, or HJ's. In respect to how much they are new what would be a reasonable price to spend on used? I was thinking of posting a wtb in the Marrakesh thread and wanted an idea of what's a decent price to pay. Thanks!

It's only worth what you're willing to let it go for and what someone else is willing to pay for it. I don't think you can really nail down one price for any hat since there are so many variables involved.

It really depends on the hat and what the market is doing. True vintage or collecitble hats can go up in price simply because they are increasingly rare. Others are so numerous in the market that you should be able to get them reasonably cheap. My best advice is to keep an eye on eBay and the classifieds around here. If you know what a given hat costs new, then figure out how much you would be willing to pay for it used and where the cutoff price for you would make it worth buying it new instead.

well, depends what the NEW price on each was and start there, if a new akubra runs around 100- i wouldnt expect to pay that for a used, it should be at least 20% less (otherwise, id buy a new one)

Don't forget that with some hats, they are readily available new, whereas with a hat such as an AB or ABD, you could easily wait for a year or more to receive it. I would expect to pay much closer to the "new" price for a used hat (provided it is still in good condition) under those circumstances than say for a Federation.

Yeah, I figured that much on AB & ABD's. They're still a little out of my price league at the moment anyway. Was just curious how high they resell on a non auction format.

Anyone see that 1971 HJ on e-bay last week? The color was "Antelope" and may have been too light. It had a wide white ribbon on it, and there was only one picture of the outside one of the inside. Still, if it was I size larger, I would have bid on it. it was $101 the whole week it was listed. Didn't move untill the last minute and a half, and went for $420!

I managed to acquire a used AB for about 65% of the "new" price, delivered to my door in less than 10 days. It felt like I was stealing!

Keep your eyes peeled!

I saw one of my 6X hats go on a famous auction site for $209.27. At the time, a new 8X one was $140.00 Go figure.

Ehh, I decided to quit trying to be cheap and just pony up the bucks for a hat, I'd almost rather have my own history with it. Instead of "hey. I bought this hat off some guy, he had it in his closet! Now I wear it instead!".. It'll be more like I have owned this hat and we've been on many adventures together, It's something I don't want to part with!"
