The search option will probably help you more than I can, but I'll have a go. Whips of different lengths occured in the Movies, though it is understood that the whip Indy has coiled up on his belt is a 10' whip. I believe that 8' whips were also used, particularly for stunt work because they have a faster action. The whip he uses in the Streets of Cairo fight scene is reported to be an 8' whip.

So, since both are used, you can order either length and have an accurate replica of the film whip. I've loved the art of whip cracking for years, and when I could afford a real, professional quality whip I ordered an 8' EM-brand whip from Bernie in Tasmania. If your new to whip cracking, I would recommend the 8', as it is the best of both worlds in my view as far as the right look and is easier to learn. I'll post a pic if you want to see what the 8' whip looks like.

anyways...I have a 8' todd whip which I am not so happy with.to much to explain..I am thinking of getting a joe strain whip since I have readed very positive things about it.I was thinking of a 10' foot but when you say that in the cairo scenes was used a 8' maby I will get that one instead?

I just want a whip with a loooong lasing life.how long does a whip like that last if you treat it right?

A well made whip that is properly cared for, used but not abused will be something you can pass on to your kids and grandkids. Joe Strains whips look incredible, and you can't go wrong getting one from him. What sold me on EM-Brand, besides the "handcrafted on the great tiers of Tasmania-Australia" pitch, was the detailed pictures on his sight showing every step he takes making his whips, from the steel rod handle to the finished product. Bernie will even send you pics of your whip in progress, and he is fast on delivery. I recommend EM-Brand very highly, check out his sight. I'd like to get a Strain whip someday, but Bernies service won me over completely so I plan on getting my next whip (whips!) from him.

Allright, here's my honest opinion:

If I were you, I'd get a whip from Joe Strain, Bernardo Del Carpio, or Paul Nolan, and I'd probably get an 8 footer if you plan on cracking it (which I hope you do!).

I've heard Joe Strain is a really very friendly and helpful guy to talk to on the phone about ordering a whip, and my first whip was one of his (a black 6ft bullwhip). I used the @#$% out of that whip, and it's now the whip I let other people try cracking for the first time with. But it's still in excellent condition despite the use/abuse, which really says a lot.

Bernardo also has a reputation for outstanding customer service, and will answer any questions you have, I'm sure. His niche is making the most screen accurate whips he possibly can. I've also cracked one of his whips before, and it had great balance and weight distribution - it cracked so easily!

Paul Nolan is another guy who will happily talk with you for as long as you have questions, and he makes truly made-to-last well-constructed whips. He makes a wide variety of whips, and has a really excellent repertoire of Indy whips. I don't know for sure if Berdardo or Strain do this, but I know that Paul is always happy to email you pictures of your whip as he is making it if you ask him.

Take your time looking around, and don't rush into anything. If at all possible, try to find someone around in your area who has a whip made by one of this forum's whipmakers. You can see how tight the braiding still is after time and use, you can see how the whip is darkening into the screen accurate color (assuming they bought it originally in natural tan), and you can feel what type of balance in a whip feels best to you. Take your time, good luck, and don't be shy about asking questions. A whip is a big investment that not only has to look good, but also has to be able to perform well and hold up with years of use.

Holt I just got a Joe Strain and I love it, it is great. Great guy to deal with and will really help you out Holt and answer any questions you have. I would go with an 8' whip first if your a beginner like myself and start learning different ways to crack the whip. I recommend calling Joe that way you get your questions answered if you have any and he has great advice for pretty much everything for your whip. All the others LemonLauren mentions are great too, some people have a personal preference. So the choice of whipmaker is yours, and I am sure I will get one from Bernardo sometime, just not right now. Take a look at my Joe Strain on my thread holt, viewtopic.php?t=27406 It really is a piece of art.

Holt, You’ve gotten very good Information so here so far. Bernardo makes great bullwhips too, They handle very well and are extremely screen accurate. In my own opinion they are as close as you can get to an older Morgan bullwhip, at least to one that David Didn’t make himself.

Regarding mink oil, Don’t use it on whips. Basically for whips you want to avoid lotions or any type liquid fat dressings like neat’s-foot oil or commercial mink oil. These lighter dressings can oversaturated the leather, causing it to swell and weaken, It a also evaporates very quickly from the leather so as the whip is used it doesn’t really benefit from it. Mink oil also attracts bugs.

Stick to a hard fat type leather dressings... Pecards classic leather dressing, Fiebings Aussie leather dressing and Jay-el leather dressing are 3 that I recommend. Jay-el is one of the Australian brands, Fiebings is available In the US and Canada, both can be ordered online and sent overseas. Pecards Classic dressing and Fiebings are petraolium based and the other is tallow based but all three contain a fair about of bees wax too.

You can buy Jay El in the US from this site

No affiliation with this site, they are the opposition really, but I recommend it to all my customers for an easy source of Jay El dressing.

Hey there Holt

I have whips by Morgan, DelCarpio and Strain. My $.02:

10' Morgan-a piece of history, cracks extraordinarily loud, handles a bit like a wet noodle
10' DelCarpio-VERY SA, handles nicely, Bernardo is great to deal with
8' Strain-super tight and fine construction, excellent handling, can't wait to get a 10', Joe is very helpful on the phone.

Bernie, nice to see a post from you! Thanks for the link to a source for Jay El; it's a terrifice dressing for the whip and I even use it on my leather jackets. The whip you made for me is alive and well, just getting better with time!
