Todd's Budget Herbert Johnson Poet Hat anyone?

Post by mooniteman »

So I'm debating between the new Akubra Fed and the Herbert Johnson Poet offered by Todd's costumes in the clearance section .

Now heres the main difference and dilemma - the Poet stands ony 5" instead of 5 which I think will be great for my shape face, BUT - they only offer it in a size 56 and I'm a 57 - will that make a huge difference? And is the poet really that fantastic?

Here's a link: http://www.toddscostumes.com/clearance.htm

What your advice folks?

Nice hat...
I happen to be a 56 :)
My only concern would be if it is tall enough to support a center dent.

Ah - is that why everyone goes with the 5.5 inches? I just hope I don't look like an idiot in a tall hat

Go with the akubra. The 5 inch will not be tall enough for the center dent and the Raiders look.

Sounds good - but it looks like the Akubra regular is only offered in 1 color now - and it looks pretty light .... dang.....

5" should support a center dent if there is not too much dome though there may be some taper. I've had centerdent hats with crowns 5" tall, but Bendingoak is right about the Raiders look. A 5" centerdent is much better for a ToD hat, which is not bad at all if that's the look your going for. 5 1/2" is much, much better though. That will be enough crown to support a wide variety of Indy styles, from Raider to LC. A lot of us do look better with a lower crown, so all of this is realative.

Looks like a wide-brimmed derby. I'd say there's too much dome for the center dent without going all cone-headed

Personally, I think the Federation is a better hat. Plus, they have the new version coming very soon, which promises to better in shape and color than ever before.

As for size... yes, it will make a difference. I advise strongly against getting a 56 if you are a 57.

I don't know how big the brim is - anybody know?

And it's looking like I might go with the Akubra - I just really wanted to get one for this shoot I'm doing in April and I'm worried they wont have the new Fed in and ready to go out until later then that.

The Feds do appear to be really nice, but certainly the wait these days is the biggest rub.

I got one by accident when I ordered one about a year or so ago, I reccomend against it, here is a link to a shot of the hat next to a crusade AB. I ended up sending the hat back for the full size one
