Leather Mark VII
Has anyone had one done in Leather?
Its a tempting thought for something truely custom...
Perhaps a little bit wider, and inside a little differnt (missing a divider)
I love my original MkVII but use my MkVI more as it is much thicker material.
I love the size of it, its great for going around London and to work, it just small enough for most days, whereas my maxpedition fatboy has the capacity I need sometime but not all the time...

I think you mean me and the one I had done was only based on the mk, then modified to the customers specs so it really didn't look like a mk in the end. Once I get my hands on some new brown oiled utility hide I'm going to make another one that will be a more exact replica of the mk. but with school and all it more than likely won't be until summer time that I make it.swcrazyfan wrote:At least one person said that they had made a MKVII leather bag before. They said they would post pics, but I don't thin they ever did.

leather Mk ?
Here is my rather loose interpretation of a Mk V (I think---the type with the pocket on the back) in leather. Obvious differences include Lift-the-Dot fasteners similar to US military gear of that era, and a different interior, set up for my intended use. Dimensions are very similar to the issue bags. Different strap adjustment, using a saddle button rather than a buckle. This is my first post, so I hope I linked to the pictures properly.

You made a very nice piece here. I was thinking of making one out of veg. cow aswell but I decided to stay with canvas.
I especcialy like the fact that you used a sam browne button on the strap.
From what I can tell on the pictures this bag might last forever (especcialy the strap attachment)
both thumbs up!

leather Mk ?
Thanks for the comments. Yes, the strap attachment should be fine. In 30 years I have never had a copper rivet fail. The leather will have to rot away first. I used veg. tanned cowhide for a bit more rigidity, and the doubled back and bottom contribute to this. A little more protection for iPod, camera and such. It replaced a heavy canvas army butt pack bag that I've used as a shoulder bag for many years.

well I just wrapped up my term at school and have roughly a week and a half before I'm back to the books, so today I pulled out some of the leather I had extra and started to work on a leather MK VII. I got all of the pieces cut today, It will more than likely take a good deal of tomorrow to stitch it since I'll have to stitch by hand, might take 2 days so I don't kill my hands. I'll take some pics during construction so you guys can see how I put it together.
I've also got to make a couple of braided kangaroo slip leaches before classes start again.

Yea, punching the stitching holes goes without saying unless you are using 1 to 2 oz leather. Pulling thread through pre punched holes is still a chore and puts wear and tear on my hands. But the results are worth the effort (at least most of the time!). Good luck with your bag. Post some pictures when you can. I'm always looking for inspiration and ideas.
