Some Questions About My Jacket

Post by Vivli »

I thought I'd post this here because I'm actually a bit curious about a few things. I own a Wested horsehide jacket I got for my birthday, and the jacket itself in an ex-custom one (it was returned for being the wrong size apparently).

The thing is, that means I don't actually know much about what was requested on it, so I thought if I posted some pictures of it here and such, people could fill me in on what some of the custom details might be on this jacket.

I'm merely asking out of curosity, after all, I love the jacket regardless of screen accuracy (it's close enough for me!). In fact, I find I'm a little too satisfied with it. I keep expecting to find something wrong or something I dislike about it, but it hasn't happened yet! I really can't find enough positive things to say about it!

There are a few pictures of me wearing the jacket in this thread;

viewtopic.php?t=26252

but I'll post some pictures of the jacket taken off here just to see if out of curosity there are any custom touches that I'm unaware of. I really love the fact it's an ex-custom, because it seems to have been custom made to my measurements! Fits me perfectly. But seeing people request all kinds of curious details on this board made me wonder if there are any special details on my jacket I didn't know about. (Heck, maybe the person who ordered it and returned it are on here somewhere!)

Anyway, here are some pictures!

I've picked up a few things from looking around on this site, like I know that it has leather facings, which aren't screen accurate (but to be honest, really don't bother me, and I actually prefer them as it means I'll never get the fabric caught up accidently!), and it has a zip on the inside pocket, which I don't think is standard, but that's about it.

Anyway, many thanks for anything people can tell me. I hope it's okay to make a thread like this. I just thought I'd ask while I was curious. Sorry if this isn't really the sort of thing I should ask!

I think you bascially nailed it. Other than what you mentioned, I don't see anything that stands out as "custom". The back panel going all the way across to the sleeve seam, is a good thing. That is an important aspect in an Indy jacket, to me anyway.
Great looking jacket.

Nice looking jacket - even the pockets look good... normally they appear far too large.

Thanks guys. And thanks for the help! I wasn't sure if there was anything especially custom, but I thought I'd ask just to settle my own curosity. Cheers!

I'm glad you guys like it! As I said, I'm really pleased with it, I just thought I'd ask to see what I could find out. Thanks again!

Well the custom bits that I can see are:

1) It has a 'Piped" and possibly zippered inside pocket

2) Single piece gussets under the arms

3) Lowered arm seams and possibly a raised yoke

4) Possibly slightly tapered sleeves

5) Rounded top to the stormflap

6) Oh it's horsehide!

7) Good pocket proportions and nicely sculpted flaps.

Oh cool, thanks. Quite a few of those things I didn't know were customised. I knew the inside pocket being zippered was, but that wasa bout it. I'm not really sure what the single piece gussets means, but that's because I'm still learning all this terminology. I've only just worked out what the stormflap is!

I was told it's an 80's cut one, so I figure that's where the tapered sleeves come from (an 80's cut is tighter, right?).

Thanks again!

Thanks again for the compliments guys!

I'm really happy with the 80's cut actually, because I'm so skinny, it tends to make it fit me really well.

I do wonder how Harrison Ford wore the 80's cut mind you, not because he's big or anything, but because he certainly seemed a lot better built than I am. (I don't mind admitting I don't have much in the way of muscle on my body!). So I would of thought an 80's fit would have fit him very tightly.

Of course, I'm missing out on the obvious fact his jacket could have just been larger!

Anyway, thanks again for the tips guys. I'm really tempted to ask if someone can run me through in what way the modifications are screen accurate over normal Westeds and such, and what parts of the jacket aren't, but I know if I do every single time I watch Raiders from now on I'll be noticing the difference between his jacket and mine!

Harrison was never a big guy. He was like every second guy you see on the street... What made him interesting was his common-place qualities. He was certainly no Charles Atlas. He had a good face for films.

Ah cool. Thanks for the explanation guys. I guess I just imagined Harrison being in better shape than I am!

It being custom made makes sense though, and I do agree Harrison isn't a huge guy. Although he seems in really good shape for Crystal Skulls, which is really impressive!
