From what I hear, it's all right, but from what I've seen, you'd be better off with an Akubra Federation, or a Federation Deluxe. Both are cheaper, and imho, they look better too. :junior: -IJ

I've heard varying opinions on this, but is there really that big of a difference between the Deluxe and the regular Federation? I mean quality of material is one thing, but I'm also just a little worried about screen-accurate color. Which is better for, let's say, a Raiders color hat?

And I know Adventurebilt rules, but can Akubra really stand up to it? I mean can Akubra be considered a good substitute?

Just to give a good idea, I wanted to keep my price range around $100 - $130 so far I have looked at the Adventurer and Federation by Akubra. I am contemplaiting on the Adventurer through David Morgan or Federatoin through Hatsdirect. looking for some reviews. thanks

From what I've heard, the best Akubras are the Federation and Fed deluxe. Never even looked at the Adventurer yet.

Depends on what you mean by "best." I suspect the Adventurer is the same quality as the Federation. It's not as "Indiana Jones" accurate in color or design. Here's mine.

Image

So it depends on whether you want an Indiana Jones "style" or one that's more screen accurate. I myself like the style but am not that concerned with precise accuracy. That's why I often wear my Adventurer, a Wested jacket but in distriessed cowhide, cargo pants, Trask boots, etc.

I say the Akubra Federation/Federation Deluxe is TOO tall for an indy hat and if you have to get an Akubra you would be better getting your hands on an Adventurer, at least it won't look... enormous on your head. And it's an good Indy-looking too if bashed correctly and cut the brim a bit.

Hmmm. I don't know. I'm fairly certain the Raiders hat is a good bit taller than the Adventurer pictured above, and the Raiders look is what I'd go for. I suppose what looks best on a person depends on head shape/body type and what not.

The picture above is not the right picture to use to guess how tall it would look on a head, it's not even on a head. All the Federation/Fed Deluxe are supertall and they never, ever, look right. Always too tall.
I leave a reference link here viewtopic.php?t=25874 about "too tall hats"

Wow that's a lot of opinions to go through. I don't see a definite answer in there really, but I suppose you could be right. I'll have to look into it more of course before actually getting one. Thanks for the help.

Well I appreciate the advice and I went ahead and purchased the Federation through (HD) to me in the photos of the Adventurer it looks a little darker than I would like or maybe its just the lighting. I like the look of the Federation plus its a good price and its around my budget. Thanks again those who responded.

Michaelson, if your puzzlment is about the last line And it's a good Indy-looking too if bashed correctly and cut the brim a bit. that was referred to the Adventurer of course.
I hope that clears up

Wow. The Akubra Adventurer... that was my first 'Indy' hat about 15 years ago. Funny DM calls it their 'newest' fedora.

Does it have 'Adventurer' written on the sweat band in an Indy font?

The Adventurer was available in a department store in Sydney called 'Gowings' for a number of years. You could get three colours- tawn, tan and black, but then they disappeared about five years ago.

The DM Adventurer block has changed considerably- it was soooo tapered back then.

No, my puzzlement is the first part of the line where you said the Federation/Fed Deluxe are to tall to be made into an Indy fedora. Are you saying you meant to say the Adventurer? If so, THAT would make sense.

I'm saying that the Federation Deluxes are too tall for an indiana jones hat. They are ridiculously high. I know it won't make sense to many but that's what I said. And I repeat that it's time to tell them to lower down the crown to a Bushman height so that many newbies and people who love rabbit felt hats will have a great looking and less expensive alternative for a raiders... and in general, an indy hat.

Which is practically like saying to put a Fed Deluxe felt on a stupid bushman block (because from what i've heard the Deluxe block is just a higher Bushman)... easy peasy. The bushman block + the fed deluxe felt will make the #### of a raiders hat.
But I do not have any influence with akubra so it's time that someone else, whoever can, would please suggest Akubra to offer a bushman with a fed-deluxe felt.

As an end note... to rejoin the original discussion, I'm saying that considering the extreem height of the Fed, nowadays it would be better to get an Adventurer... at least until they will be able to offer the fed-deluxe felt on a bushman/squatter block.

Well, with all due respect, I might ask you to show me a fed deluxe that doesn't look enormous then... I haven't found any around. And I remind that those hats are around 6". No hats are so tall in our hobby but the fed deluxe

Not much point in it. To my eye they look correct, and to yours they look too short, so there's not much to prove in that regard, is there? So, we may as well move along to other topics.

Well actually there is... when you put it near a screengrab from any Indiana Jones film. The hat is just not enormous in the film. A simple comparison will show that. We shouldn't be afraid of posting this stuff. Afterall it's still for the sake of our hobby

Who's afraid? I have other things to do, erri, but if someone else wants to take up your gauntlet, please be my guest.

By the way, it was our own 'Fedora', Steve Delk, and a committee of several COW vets who worked with Ron at HatsDirect in determining the crown heights for the Fed line. If you want to argue with his specs and tell the maker of the Indy IV hat he is wrong, have at it.

Well Steve agreed too in another thread if I'm not wrong.
viewtopic.php?t=25874

Afterall ABs are not that tall... and the reason is that it's because it's more accurate with shorter crowns than the FedDeluxes.

If Steve agrees, then I stand corrected. #-o

I still don't think they look to tall, but like I said, that's what I see and what I've always heard from Steve and the committee when the Fed line was created, and from all these years folks have been buying them.

Steve, if you pass through this thread, how about offering your opinion. I just read through the link erri provided, and I see what you say, but the Fed line was not mentioned (or if it was, I sure missed it!) Do you include them in your determination, as that thread was a discussion of the making of custom hats?

I'd still like to see you offer your comparison work erri. Those are always educational. Seriously!

Not to take sides, what with my extreme newbness and all, but I agree with Erri- if Akubra would make a 5 1/4"- 5 1/2" crown hat with a better brown color, it would ROCK!
I think Steve was saying that 'we' now know the original hats weren't as tall as first thought -hence the KotCS hats in the 5 1/4- 1/2 range.
Not to mention a 6 inch crown looks like a top hat on a lot of people.

Well, it's been a while since I had a new Fed or Deluxe in hand, but none of mine were ever over 5.5 inches in height open crown, so I'm finding this kind of interesting. :-k

it was my understanding that the Feds were 5.5 for smaller sizes, and 6.0 for larger sizes...just by reading other posts here

That was communicated to me in an email inquiry. However, I didn't get the specifics as to what size the crown height increases. My hat size is a 57 and they indicated it would be the 5.5" crown height. My guess would be that anything large (59) and up would be the 6" height, but that's just my guess.

Peace.

Well, my hat size is 7 3/8 (59), so if that is considered a 'smaller size', then that's what I got, a 5.5 inch open crown, once again repeating it's been a while since I've had a new one in hand, so something could have changed in the past year or two.

My Adventurer crown sits at 5.35" with a tiny teardrop top. Any taller just does not look right on me, but it looks like 5.5" is very possible from it.
