Opinons please.

Post by IndigoJuliet »

As I cannot wait 1 year at the moment for my first fedora. Can I have opinions on the following please?

Peter Brothers Custom
or
Magnolis

These are the two I have cut the list down to..
Oh btw
You might want to check

http://www.indianajoneshat.co.uk/indian ... oraHat.htm

and the claims made about the "Indiana Jones Baron 'Cliffhanger' Fur Felt Fedora Hat" and who supplied the hats for the 4th indy jones movie...

I thought there was only one supplier...

Barons didn't make the hat for Indy IV, that was a false rumor that was spread around several months ago. The maker for Indy IV was Club Obi-Wan's own Fedora. From what you've described about your potential choices, it seems money is no object, so I'd go for an adventurebilt.

If you insist on one of the two you mentioned, I'd go for the magnoli - it's got the Herbert Johnson name and its crafted by Fedora, so in many ways you've got the best of both worlds. :junior: -IJ

That said, the PB is indeed a custom and the Magnoli is not, so there's that to factor into the final equation.

If he wants a hat soon, then the AB is out of the question, with the Magnoli running a close second to 'out of the question' as well.
They're both out of the same shop.

Ah, very true Indigo (hey, our screennames have the same initials! :P ). I know a lot of people aren't attracted to the wait time of the AB (I can't say I am either, but the quality, imho, makes the wait worth it). Okay, well if you take the AB and the AB deluxe out of the equation, then I think the Magnoli is definitely your best bet. It's basically like having a rabbit fur AB with the HJ name, so it's nearly as good. :junior: -IJ

edit: @ michaelson, I think we posted at the same time. I was under the impression that it takes Steve less time to make one for Magnoli, and that the wait time, as a result, was shorter.

It's supposed to be, but with the crush on trying catch up his orders before the film is released, and if you're comparing it to the PB turn around time, PB is actually the same or less at this time.

Well thanks for the opinions, any idea what the story is with this site in the UK? Seems new and acutally rather poorly done.

hmm good question. I think it's likely that whoever wrote this site is operating with old information (and may be stating the old rumor as fact, which is a big no-no).

BTW, if you hate the long wait times on hats, you could always order a Magnoli or AB, and in the meantime, buy an akubra federation which only takes about a week to arrive. :junior: -IJ

I have my Akubra cattleman, (I am australia sentenced to live in england...) I am sure I can get the federation quicker..

I can always go to S&B as I live in London I suppose.

I do like both hats acutally but do lean towards the Peterbros, and will either contact one of the two AB suppliers (US Or Germany)

I would never want to contradict my esteemed collogue (IndyGear Mentor?) Michaelson, but my Magnoli HJ was completely customized by Fedora to my noggin and face, using photos and notes of every little detail I wanted, and I got it. The only way to have gotten a closer fitting would be to have been standing in Steve's shop with him using my head for the block. That sounds really uncomfortable...

Understood.
Well, keep in mind a LOT of water has gone under the bridge since you got your hat. Needless to say, Steve has been buried even worse since the official announcement that the AB was the official Indy IV hat......so I assure you, things have changed a bit since you got your HJ.

Hopefully he's able to do the turn around faster, but I'm sure it's been hugely impacted with the AB work.

Oh, I know that Fedora is even more swamped now than a week ago thanks to the indianaJones.com video. I was just addressing the customization question. As for my own turnaround, my wife ordered my hat on my birthday, April 8th...so six months and change? Not bad and I'll bet it's closer to a year now (if you round up). But, are you suggesting that the MC HJ is less apt to be customized now that the AB cat is out o' the bag? That would be saddening but understandable from a workload point of view. Oh well. Keep on Truckin' Steve!

When I contacted Magnoli about getting a HJ from him he said the wait time would depend on hat size in stock. He said it would be longer if they had to order the hat. This was last month, but having the hat before the film he said was very close last month when I ordered the hat. So I am assuming if you get a Magnoli/AB/HJ that is would take 5-6 months to make your hat. I also gave Magnoli pictures to send to Steve and Steve actually has my pictures from the AB hat I am getting from him later this year. I just hope I get my Magnoli hat before May 22nd. It is going to be close, fingers crossed. [-o<

I ordered a Magnoli HJ after reading about the wait times for an AB. Obviously I didn't research this extensively enough, (I'm new to this) as at the time I placed my order I didn't realize the Steve Delk connection. I was notified by Indy Magnoli via e-mail that he could not provide a time-frame for filling the order until he heard back from Steve. I'm thrilled at the idea that one of the IJIV hat makers may be involved in creating my HJ but have to admit that had I realized this I probably would have bit the bullet and ordered an AB. Once I determined that having my HJ in time for May 22nd was unlikely I went ahead and ordered a Federation. Like IJ stated, the wait was nil. 9 days to Canada and a hat I'm quite pleased with.

AB may have order times down to 9-10 mo. soon. A little shorter, if every month counts..

You are right there my friend every month and day counts. Is about 99 days till opening night of KOTCS about 63 days have passed since Steve made the cut off for those who will get their ABs before the big day. I know I will not get my AB before KOTCS, but at least I am getting one. I do hope my Magnoli/AB/HJ comes in sometime before the movie, but if not an Akubra looks like it will have to do me good for the opening of the movie. So I guess I will see what happens. Just keeping my fingers crossed.

I think that's a fine option...I guess that's why I went with it. I got the Fed delivered to my door from Australia in about a week and it's a very nice hat. Albeit, I'm sure the AB will blow it's doors off when it arrives.

I may recommend something a little different -

A few years ago, I got an Indy hat in soft felt from Optimo Hats, based out of Chicago.

I think I paid somewhere in the neighborhood of $400.00 for it, but I've never regretted the purchase.

I told Graham what I was looking for, including crown height, brim dimensions, sizing, ribbon color, etc...

What I got was gorgeous...it did require a little bit of customization of the front pinch and I had to shape the brim, but it wasn't as difficult as it seemed.

This year, I finally needed to send it in to get it restored (cleaned, reblocked, ribbon replacement, etc).

The entire hat rebuild was around $100.00.

What I got looked like a brand new hat (and I had a seriously dirty, worn hat when I sent it off!)

Unfortunately, I did have to reshape and rebash it, but it was definitely worth it.

Turnaround time on the original order was around a month or two if I remember right.

The only downside to the hat at present is that on the right side, the "swoop" has gotten a little malformed, and nothing I have tried has gotten it out.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to steam it to get it back to its original shape. Being as I've never done that, I'm a little nervous....but one of these days I'm going to bite the bullet and give it a shot.

Dont' mean to hijack! Slader, not sure what you mean by "malformed" but have you tried using a little hat stiffener on it?

No - mainly because I don't want the swoop on that side to keep it's current shape, and I haven't been able to get it back into it's correct shape.

The left side is perfect - and I know "malformed" is a bad way to describe it...somehow the swoop just isn't quite right - it's almost like its developed a slight fold, and then a dramatic dip where it should more gradually "flow."

I suspect I just need to steam it and reform it...the left side is perfect, I just need to get the right side to match it!

I actually have a picture here, taken from my girlfriends myspace page.

http://www.barnettcollege.com/~drjones/ ... dSwoop.jpg

You can't really see the side as well as I'd like, but you can why it looks like it's shaped funny from the side.

Sorry for the threadjack!
