So you thought the $500 Dorfman was it, well not anymore! There's a $2,000 Stetson Indiana Jones hat on ebay now! I'd post a link, but I don't want to test the moderators again.

I hope no one falls for this. I sold one that was in new condition (unlike this "gem)" for $110 a couple of years ago, and I thought that was way too much, but there were 2 determined bidders... I sold another one, a used grey one, for about $30, I think.

It's no long-lost secret that Stetyson sold Indy hats in 1984; this person is either misinformed or trying to pull a fast one.

Gee whillikers! I just got a Stetson from Dr Seuss for around $30 also. I wonder if I have the ufties to pass it off on ebay for that much. Well, as Barnum used to say.... If someone is willing to pay for it, I'll sell! It's the Belloq principle.

I have occasionally let vendors know when they have listed items at way beoynd the going price. There was a guy who put up a set of Colmont binocs for around $50, instead of the going $9.99, for instance. One of you hat experts should let him know - give him the opportunity to withdraw. On the other hand, as a old New Englander, if he can sell a wooden nutmeg as real spice, Gor bless 'im!

He is basically saying this hat is rare, and where did he get that this hat never existed? He said he got this from websites including indygear. Is this hat even worth $2,000? I don't think so, the only way this Hat would even be worth that much is if Harrison Ford wore the hat, signed the liner or another part of the hat, as well as GL and Steven Spielberg.

There is no way that hat is worth $2000, I don't know why they think that hat is rare??

Let's not go for early retirement just yet, folks. Just because that's the asking price, it hasn't gone anywhere, so it's worth that to this seller, not the collector world.

I sure hope this isn't being offered by a member of our community. They should know better. They say in the auction they 'did research'. 'Where?", I'd like to ask?

The only hats that Lucas and Stetson discussed prior to the release of TofD were fur felt, and they had special Stetson co. shield logos embossed on the cloth sweat band. I know, as I own one that came directly from the Paramount studios prop warehouse in early 1985, obtained by and given to me by an old friend in the business.

The deal never went through, even though product placement occured during the film. Those fur felts were absorbed into the Stetson inventory for sale through their outlets and other Stetson dealers. They ALL had the 1984 date.

I want to believe this individual made an honest mistake. If not, they've spun the truth into this tale of what he WANTS his standard wool Stetson to be, rather than what it really is.

While the seller has a flair for the dramatic, I was raised to never mow another man's rhubarb.

We know better than this gentleman, but perhaps he doesn't. Maybe he thinks he has a real treasure there - based on his feedback profile he clearly isn't a snake oil salesman or anything nefarious...Probably just a guy who think he's got something great on his hands.

Everyone has the right to make a living without being judged. If someone is unfortunate enough to purchase this hat, who are we to judge?

EDIT - I find this auction infinitely less offensive than the one below it entitled "Movie prop SKELETON ARGONAUTS Indiana Jones skull wars" should you sort by the Highest Price feature.

There's another seller auctioning the same make and model of hat for <$30. Same logo seal in the crown and everything. Wonder if that will help put things in perspective.

I respect it's history too... I love the thing... the same way I love my Don Pst Vader Helmet, although it's FAR from screen accurate... it's got HISTORY on it's side.

Doesn't make it worth 2 grand though...

A nice wool felt 1984 era Stetson should be in the $40-$50 range tops. Fur felt would be in the $70-$100 at the most. I have a nice fur felt (dark brown) Indy Stetson I picked up a while ago on eBay. Also have my original wool one. Accurate? No. Indy collectible? Yes.

But I agree, $2,000 is just insane.

Holy Carp!! I have that same hat I bought back in University in the mid 80's!!! I paid a whopping five bucks for it at the Stetson outlet in Guelph Ontario. WooHoo...I'm rich!

Oh darn, I just saw another one just like it for ten bucks.

Ya man, this was back in the mid-80's when I was at U of G. I really don't remember where it was exactly but I wouldn't be surprised if it was gone by now. Guelph has changed quite a bit since then!

Too bad. I still maintain that the guy thought he had a real treasure on his hands. It must be horrible to have your parade completely rained upon.

My advice to him would be to actually wear the hat and have some adventures.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter if you look like Indiana Jones. What matters is if you feel like Indiana Jones.
