Unfortunately due to this nasty habit I have of needing to eat along with 5 kids,and about 15 grandkids,(lost count)I have had to sell the lot. I am working on more though

Thanks for posting the link to those pics, Bernie. There's some nice-looking whips in there, to be sure. Do you do all the engraving on your metal buttcaps yourself, by hand? I saw one recently and I couldn't believe how small and neat the lettering was.

However... (and here Adam reverts to being a nerdy stickler of points the probably don't need to be stickled...)

Hmmm

, would it count as a collection only if all those whips were together in once place at some time, and owned by the same person at the same time? I mean, I've taken pictures of lots of the whips I've sold through the years, but I never really considered them part of my collection.

Anyway, one of the things I really like about this forum is that it openly allows vendors such as whip makers to post pics of whips they have made, and let members here know what they have for sale. It's basically free advertising, which I know I've certainly benefited from.

Thanks Gio and purewhips. I see you got my meaning Gio whereas I don't think you did Adam. It was all said with tongue in cheek Adam. I thought after your stay here in Australia you would have cottoned onto our humour. You need to come back mate and come to Tassie for awhile, we'll put you up and show you around as well.
The caps I do engrave myself freehand under 4x magnification and I engrave all the silver and gold rings as well.I thought of the idea because it personalises the whip for whoever it is going to and the other thing is that in 100 years time when someone looks at the whip and thinks to themselves, as I have often done when repairing whips,I wonder who made this, all they'll have to do is look at the butt cap and get the full history, who it was made by,for, and the date it was made. The same with the certificate and the DVD I send with each whip.I've gotten to the stage now with my engraving that making and engraving the butt cap takes no more than 15 minutes. A small price to pay I think for some customer satisfaction.

I guess not. I've been putting in some long hours in the shop trying to get my current list of whip orders finished before I leave for points south to do some whip performing rather than whip making. I think the long hours have rotted my brain

I would have liked to come down to Tasmania the last time I was in OZ, especially to visit Ben Hughes and Simon Martin, but boy is Australia a big country, and Brisbane isn't that close to Tasmania. At least this last time Ben and Simon flew up to Brisbane.

I've already got plans to come back next year, and I'm going to try to plan to stay longer, perhaps a month, so I can do more traveling and sight-seeing.

It is a big country Adam. A lot of people don't realise that it is very close to the size of the US and we only have 25.000.000 people in it. As for the internet and this forum and forums like it I couldn't agree with you more. I started on the internet a bit over 8 years ago and my very first customer on the internet was Jim J who I think is a member here, he'll know who I mean. Before that I made whips on a strictly wholesale basis and my wife and I used to make something in the order of 2000, yes two thousand , whips a year. Admittedly they were mostly 4 plait and 6 plait cowhide stock whips used for stock work with a few hundred kangaroo hide whips thrown in but it got to a stage where I was working 16 hour days plaiting whips and everyone was making money except me. It all came to a head when our government decided to impose a goods and services tax on everything and make business owners the tax collectors. It was then I decided to try the internet , because there is no tax collected on exported goods, and we haven't looked back since thanks to forums like this and the internet in general. In that time I've made a bit over 2000 whips and have enjoyed making every one of them.Where else could you get worldwide free advertising.
So let me say a hearty thank you to my past and future customers .
