80's fit specifics

Post by coronado3 »

As far as measurements go, how and where on the jacket are there differences between the 80's cut and the regular?

Preparing to order my first non 2nd hand wested in HH and I want to get it right!!!!!

Anyone own both in the same size that can measure them for me? I'm aiming for a 42 reg with the TOD length body.

Tanks!

Then you're wanting a 42 long instead of a 42 regular.

Yeah, I want the 1 inch longer temple body, not lengthened sleeves.

I believe i read that the difference between a reg and long wested is an 1 1/2" in the arms and body.

Are you sure you want that longer body? I'm 6'2" and I think the body is too long for SA. The sleeves could be an inch or more longer to be comfortable, but the body interacts quite awkwardly with the MkVII and holster. Unless you just want that jacket for wearing purposes.........

Yeah, I have had standard Raiders westeds as well as todd's standard and i think they look (and feel) too short on me.

I'm 6' 4", and orderer a 46L. In fact, it was supposed to measure 27.5" (backlenght), but it came 26.75" (slightly longer than the regular - 26.5").
Besides of that, i love the jacket.

I think it is a little shorter than it should, so I would advise anyone (particulary the taller ones) to ask the L's.

C3 - Just out of curiosity, how tall are you and what size Todd's jacket did you get? The medium I returned was too short on me at 5'10", and I'm also debating whether or not to get "ToD Length" on my yet to be ordered very first Wested.

I am 5' 9" and I ordered a Todd's in large. I really felt too short in the body. The sleeves were perfect and the overall fit was great.

In my opinion, when I watch Raiders, it appears that the length is longer than most of the raiders jacket photos I see around here.

So, where exactly is the 80's pattern cut thinner?

from what i can tell, the body is thinner (tighter), the armholes are higher, and the sleeves are slimmer.

this is going be my wested standard vs. my custom tod, size 42's.

on another note, my 80's cut 44 (at least that is what i requested) felt really close to the standard 42.....at least i believe, the patter on my 44 goat was an 80's fit. i question that because the arm seam lines up with the yoke seam on that guy where it should fall below it (but then again, i do not know if the placement of this seam denotes the pattern as an 80's fit anyways). my pre veg tanned lamb is definitely a 44 80's cut....no doubt about that. slimmer and tighter than the goat by quite a bit.....hmmmm....so maybe the goat wasn't an 80's cut?

anyways, i can see a superior difference from what peter is shipping out the door now compared to a year ago.

Does the 80's fit get rid of the "flying squirrel" effect? Does it at least reduce it?

Can anyone tell me how G&B, USW and Todd's stack up in this regard?

Many thanks.

As for the length issue - here's my .02 on the subject. The jacket seems both short and long when looking at Raiders and ToD. I think generally speaking it's a myth that the jacket was on the short side for Raiders, it was fairly long throughout that movie except for the Raven Bar sceen where it was shorter than most of the other sceens. Likewise for ToD, the general accepted belief here has always been that that jacket is longer but watching it the other night with my kids (for the umpteenth time) I noticed that in many sceens it actually comes off as short. So I think that alot of the questions about length come down to how the jacket is being worn on the body and or camera angles, I doubt there was much difference between them. Westeds tend to make the body too short though, I figured this out after buying a couple of them that always felt weird. So, if your getting a Wested I'd recommend a Long but specify your sleeve length.

Not trying to stir up a controversy here, but I have pondered this in the past. Is it possible that the 80s cut jacket is EXACTLY THE SAME as the regular fit? Has anyone owned both styles in the same size who can post pics comparing the two?

Texas, do you mean perhaps they are the same cut but just different standard sizes (I've wondered about that myself), or are you thinking this about jackets of the same labled size..?

I've owned both. The 80s fit is more tight and that contributes in the ride up of the jacket making it appear even shorter. That *****.

I was just wondering if the 80's cut is better suited for people with a slender build. I'm putting together my specs for my first Raiders jacket and I'm debating between an 80's fit and a standard cut. Will the 80's cut feel too constricting on those with a more muscular frame or for those who have a little extra padding around the middle (I'm not saying which one describes me)? I'd like my jacket to fit like a glove, just not a latex glove! Thanks for any help!

My 1980s fit does not feel too tight at all - just more trim and less drape-like.

I thought, and by some of the pics of 80's fit jackets, that an 80's fit had tighter arm holes and wore like a slim fitting jacket. Granted you could get that with ordering a smaller size , but it is the smaller arm holes that seem to make the difference. I have a custom DB lamb and a 48R cow and both have that flying squirrel, the custom more so than the standard 48R.
