Most screen accurate leather....

Post by Toldog07 »

Every time i look at my wested goat and compare it to my wested lamb i just have to say that the goat is definetly the most accurate leather for a wested jacket. The lamb is nice but the goat just has that indy look to it in terms of drape and thickness.

I am really glad that peter will be offering the goat again and i suggest that anoyne looking for that perfect screen accurate leather grab one while you can :)

Well, considering the screen jackets in the original trilogy were actually made of lamb, it's really hard to call goat the SA leather. Still, it's been argued that the original lamb used back then differs from the current lamb offerings. Regardless, goat is a fantastic hide to use for the jackets and I prefer it for an everyday jacket.

ah yes, i left that part out...

The originals were in lambskin but i have heard on countless occasions that the lambskin used back then isnt the same that is available today, and that the goatskin is the closest to the old lambskin.

I wonder if this could be related to the food idea that what is called "lamb" today would have been called "mutton" 30 years ago. They kill the beasts when they are larger, so the meat is more strongly flavored. Or perhaps the source of the skins has changed. Anyone know why this might be?

I think that it has to do with the idea that there are basically two types of lambskins used in manufacturing leather items (as far as it relates to Indy jackets anyway). One kind comes from Italy and is generally smaller built animals and the other lambskin is from New Zealand which are (perhaps) bigger with thicker hides partially due to the colder climates [US Wings uses this type]. Also another big difference is that the leather used on the original Indy jackets were vegetable tanned, which initially produces a stiffer leather but that breaks in nicely .. wested sources the softer chrome tanned variety now, which BTW I think pocesses less natural character and graining - to some degree.

I've got to say I have a Wested goat and fantastic though it is - it looks nothing like the film jacket - nor do any goat jackets I've seen. Only the lamb looks like the film jacket. I'm talking Raiders here and the jacket in this film looks alot like a well worn denim jacket. For the other films... who cares? Actually - the LC jacket looks a little more like goat in some scenes.

 I'm just sitting back listening to others.

It's true the original tannery went under just after Raiders was released, according to Peter. Their lambskin was definitely different in feel and weight than what is currently out there. More than likely it was the old style tanning they did made it so.

The closest I've seen, if you're looking for lambskin, is the leather sourced from New Zealand. That's where Gibson and Barnes get theirs from, Wings gets theirs, and I believe that's where Indy Magnoli gets his (not sure about that, though). It's a bit stiffer than what is currently available out of Italy, which, to my taste, is more of a dressier type hide and more prone to tears.

In terms of SA 'appearance', that's a toss up to what you're looking at in any given frame in Raiders.

I'm very interested in what this vintage goatskin will look like that Wings is currently making up at the factory.

With the arrival of the new goatskin from Wested, it's pretty good looking stuff, and supposed to be lighter. I wonder where that was sourced?
