Wested Jackets - Which one?

Post by Grey_Starr »

I am hear to ask about the Jacket from Wested... http://www.indyjacket.co.uk/frjacket.html... this is a jacket I plan to wear quite regularly in the spring and fall... (and of course as a complete costume)... I plan to dress for the RotLA...

There are SO many options avaiable!... Naturally I have reviewed the forums trying to find the best options... One type of jacket skin type is never mentioned, and it was the one I originally thought to get... What is everyones opinion on the Pre distressed Hide?

Also, which is the best type to get?

Jacket Type:
RotLA Jacket
Crunch Lambskin
Raiders Goatskin
Raiders Jacket

Skin Type for the Raiders ONLY:
Authentic Brown Lambskin
Dark Brown Lambskin
Pre distressed Hide
Dark Brown Horsehide

AND just as an FYI... they have JUST added this week a a Special Offer; Raiders 'COMBO'- Jacket + Pants + Shirt (Combo Price £200 + single postage saving £13 and extra postage - On the higher price jackets only the price diference is added)

Thanks for any replies...

I would order a raiders with Temple of Doom length ( wested raiders is too short imo) in goat. That is a great looking yet tough combination!

So you're suggesting getting a custome sized Jacket then?

Oh, yes. It doesn't cost that much more.... Even if the only customization you get is the slightly longer body length, I think it is worth the extra $! Plus for the same price, you can get the lining you want, etc.

I have seen many new jackets around here that appear and 1 - 1.5 too short. Watch the opening temple scene in Raiders... that jacket extends far below his belt line.

I'll post some pics later...

Then look at the photos in this link: http://kentbovin.com/Wested%20lamb.htm

It is the exact same jacket on all 4 photos. You will be told very often that the jacket in ROTLA looks darker than the authentic brown "out of the bag". But it's all in the distressing and the lightning. As long as the lamb is new it has a glossy-like surface and appear much lighter brown than when it has been distressed.

Man... the only way to decide is do the research. Other people's opinions are not going to help all that much. You need to ask yourself why are you getting the jacket and what do you want it to convey. Then read about the various models and decide which one meets your requirements.

Oh, I don't know.

Sometimes opinions are useful if you already have an idea of what you want, but want to make sure that you haven't made some obvious oversight. Getting people to say what they are thinking can help you reflect on your own choices.

That said, you have to live with whatever you buy, so think hard

Yes, educating yourself before you buy is key. Be sure to check out Todd's offerings as well, especially if it's the Raiders look you are after.

Honestly, if you say you want Raiders, I'd go with Raiders length and '80's fit. Hide is up to you, but if you plan to use it a lot you might want to go with goat. :junior: -IJ

I ask, because you guys already went though a lot chosing your own Jackets... and I value an educated opinion...

Still haven't heard anything about the hide option of "Pre distressed Hide"... what is the hide?... has anyone seen it?

A link might be better since I'm not that familiar with the makers... "Todd"?

I prefer the HH myself. I have a lamb (my first one) and it has a completely different feel of drape. If you want SA raiders go for the lamb...if you want a jacket you can feel while you wear it go for the HH

Grey, a basic search on Todd's jackets will provide you with a wealth of information. Yes, a lot of folks have researched their jackets, but not everyone wants exactly the same thing in their jackets. While it's good to know other folks' opinions, it ultimately doesn't beat doing some of your own homework. Good luck!

I agree about taking your time. The amount of info on COW is daunting but wade through it and you will be rewarded with a great jacket however you decide to go. Look around and then make sure you decision based on what is most important to you -SA, durability, price etc. I made a mistake by not being specific enough with my first Wested but thankfully there were fit and construction errors that allowed me to return it and reorder a jacket more to my liking.

Found no Todd links here... so I googled it and found it (toddscostumes.com)... Definately sounds and looks great!

I think the appeal for the Wested, right now, is it's not only cheaper (not the biggest deal) but it comes with (cloes enough) pants and shirt! (which gets it all in my grubby hands all at once)... and over that, they were the ones that provided the Jacket for the movies... (just a bragging point for those not in the know - which is over 90% of those I'll meet will in costume...)

I still haven't heard from Wested on just what the Pre distressed Hide is... which is really what is keeping me from ording at this very moment... especially since no one here - or from other posts/sites - has convinced me that one jacket is truely "better" then another...

Just think... all this started because I have a Han Solo costume... lol

Ahhh - I'll have to convert the D rings! why would they do that!?!?!

I agree with Nebraska, you really have to be specific on what you want if you do get custom. My specs list was not daunting, but it was specific and to the point. I ended up getting a great jacket. It just makes me want another one. :D If you really do your research and get the specs detailed and just get your measurements ready, you should be ready to go. There is not really one jacket better than the other, I think it is just personal preference, or if your going for that SA look. I did check Todd's and it is expensive, but it really looks SA. As a saying goes, you get what you pay for. You have to decide what you wantin a jacket. Horsehide is a great looking jacket, and I just got a Lambskin, and I really love the look of it. Those are my thoughts, good luck on your purchase Grey Starr.

I'm pretty sure that if we're talking about Wested then "pre-distressed" hide would be a cowhide.

Okay... I've heard other hints that it was Cow as well...

S, after everything I have read here... and everywhere else... I'll stick to the Goat then... and distress it the good old fashioned beat the @#$% out of it myself way... :D ...

Next Challenge for me... the Hat! I bought on eBay some POS, the cheap Disney one... already I wish I hadn't! D'oh!! odds are the Cheap US Wings one would be better!

I got it! Just be resigned to the fact that this will only be the FIRST jacket you will buy and that you will have future attempts to "get it perfect". Because lets face it, they are all pretty cool.
