I was thinking of getting a pair of LL Bean Chinos. What is the best Indy color to select?

taupe seems to be the agreed-on closest. Here's what Wiki says about THAT:

Taupe is a vague, unscientific color term which may be used to refer to almost any grayish-brown, brownish-gray, or warm gray color. It often overlaps with tan and even people who use color professionally (such as designers and artists) frequently disagree as to what "taupe" means.

Confusing enough? Dark khaki may be the match for the colors listed on the Bean site.

As far as dress chinos go, as mentioned above the Dark Khaki is the closest – that’s not saying that it’s SA though. It kind of looks like some of the outside shots in Raiders where the pants are covered in dust and in the sunlight. LLbean does offer a pair of Microfiber trousers in taupe which are much better color wise, but a slightly more delicate material. Unless you’re going for variety, stay clear of the chinos in regular khaki or heritage khaki – the first is too light and the second is too gold. For more, see this thread:

I agree with Panama. The MF Taupe is very close in color to the officer pinks.

The taupe is only an option with the Microfiber Chino pants.

Yeah, the microfiber Taupe is closest. But for the Dress Chinos, go with dark khaki.

hey..I am trying to order some ll beans right now.

what do they mean when they say. inseam lengt:cuffs?and no cuffs?

hope someone can clear this out for me?

The inseam length is measured from the crotch to the bottom of the hem.

The cuff question refers to whether you want cuffs at the hem. For indypants, that would be - negative. No cuffs.

and measuring from crothc to just below my ancless?or above?

You measure from your crotch height to wherever you feel you want the bottom of your pants should lay. Some prefer the bottom of your pant leg to touch your boots. Some want more... it depends. Just measure any pants in your closet where you like the length.

Natural Fit
Natural Fit, Hidden Comfort

(By the way, does anyone else prefer plain fronts rather than pleated? I know it isn't SA, but I think they look better).

Yes I totally do like plain front pants better BUT only if they are wide leg through-out. For a truely Indy look the pants need to be baggy, so the best for that is the pleated ones, the only plain front pants that will work (IMHO) is some with really wide legs (like Abercrombie & Fitch sells) but those are nowhere near SA in the other details. The average dockers are just not cut right, neither are the plain front LL Beans - I've had those too. LL Bean would be your best bet though if you must go the plain front route but consider getting them one size larger than you normally wear (I wish I had), again for the baggy look that Indy always has. my .02$

Take a look at the Bill's. especially the M1P. They're expensive, but made in the US

I used to buy the Natural Fit (either one), but I tried Classic fit once. I find that unless you have huge upper legs, Classic Fit looks best (though smaller waist sizes might not look as baggy in the Natural fit, I'm a 44). It's got plenty of room, despite being listed as their "slimmest fit". The good thing about the Hidden Comfort design is that the front pockets are SA (slanted), where the others are straight on the seam.
