Crown Height

Post by IndigoJuliet »

Well my first post as a lurker for years.
Question that I have is mainly on the crown hieght, the Raider with the higher 5+ inch does not suit me, I have tried a Alexssandria which I think is about 4 1/4 which is pretty much spot on for me, so which style of indy Fedora would suit? I am leaning towards the LC style.

Unless I am mistaken, none of the official Indy styles would suit your crown height requirements. They are all 5.5 to 6 inches. I am with you on this one. I look pretty dorky in a high crown and stick to 4.5 inches max. If you want an Indy hat, I suggest that you have one custom made to your crown height specifications. It will not be a "real" Indy in the strict sense, but you have to be happy with it. This is probably what I will do too eventually. If you have been lurking here for four years, then you no doubt already know where to go for a custom hat. Jimmy Pierce offers the most reasonable (i.e., lowest) prices or you can go to Adventurebilt - probably the highest quality - and Steve may offer you a COW discount on one of his hats. Hope this helps.

I just don't know how you can it a Indy fedora without the tall crown height. Thats what makes it an Indy. I thought the same thing when i first started to get hats with a tall crown Height. It just didn't feel right but I couldn't have a fedora without a tall crown to it.

Maybe it just takes some getting used to...a high crown, I mean. I am not even used to seeing myself in a hat PERIOD, so maybe if I try a high crown, I'll grow to like it. Anyone else have this experience?

IJ:

4 1/4 creased, correct? Not 4 1/4, open crowned?

IMHO, the quintessential "Indy" look is "tall." The appearance of height, of course, should be created by considering your facial/head proportions. What is "tall" for me, may look simply crazy on you.

It took me a while to get used to the tall crown. I think Bending Oak is right in his comments. I love my tall crown AB's.

It reminds me of that Bugs Bunny cartoon where the mob guy is wearing his fedora (he's very short -- and his hat is about twice the height of him. Does anyone remember this?)

When I got my first real Indy hat, a Peter's Bros., I thought I looked like Mugsy the cartoon gangster when I wore it. Now, I love the tall crown. Give it time, it will grow on you.

Alright, alright. Here is "tall."

All, at least a six inch open crown. Nothing to fear.

Hee, hee. If I could just fine a "real" Indy style hat with tall crown and all and try it on and see how I look in it, that would be a huge help. I am not about to dish out $$$ for an Indy hat without first seeing how it looks, only to have to send it back to sell it here or on eBay. We have one local hatter in town so maybe he has an Indy style with a 5.5 or 6 inch crown to model.

Isn't the Akubra Fed a good choice for that -- that way you can bash em as you see fit and they're not too expensive...

The Fed Dlx worked for me, took a little time to get used to the height of 4.75 in the front after creasing ROTLA tight pinch. But now I want all my has in a 5.5 - 6 inch open crown.

While I'm at it just wanted to say thanks for all the great post on here, not only did it help me find a great hat but also how it should look. Got an AB on order.

Thanks to all again.
